When it is cold I usually wear Sitka Fanatic gloves with chemical packs in either the Sitka muff or the muff in the Sitka Fanatic vest. When it is not too cold just the Fanatic gloves will do. If it is wet out I wear cheap jersey gloves while getting into and out of the stand since I know they...
In warm weather I would just use a cheap synthetic base layer. In cooler weather around 200 merino. I would not worry about the brand. I have the cheap and expensive merino baselayers and see little difference between the two.
As you likely know good head coverings make a big difference in...
A little off topic but four years ago I started using Lenz electric socks in my waders while winter steelhead fishing and I could not believe how warm they kept my feet. I’ve since used them for stand hunting. They have been a game changer for me. No more clunky boots, over boots and chemical...
The Fanatic Hoody is so versatile it is almost a must have. If I wanted to save money I would not spend big dollars on the base layers and mid layers. For stand hunting buy cheap or on sale wool or synthetic garments and just match it to the temps you are hunting in. You will get the hang of...
I can push the Stratus down into the 20s by loading up on under layers but at a certain point my comfort level also goes down then. The Stratus shines in the 30s, the Fanatic in the 20s. Rain (unless a steady downpour) and snow won’t bother you in either.
No experience with it but I looked at the website and would not even think about using this clothing on a -40* hunt. This is dangerous cold weather.
For your parka, bibs, mittens and headgear look at companies who are in the business of making garments for brutal cold weather. I would start...
The best thing to do to get as close to an apples to apples comparison as you can on warmth is to compare the fill power, fill weight and total weight of each jacket. This is easier said than done as many companies do not list the fill weight of their jackets. You can call customer service to...
I think any puffy under say 20 oz. would be fine under the Axis for bow hunting as they will still weigh less than the Fanatic’s 46 oz. But every archer is built a little different and layers different so I would do a trial run with the two jackets to see if they work well together.
I don’t have either but have worn a jacket with about the same down as the Volant and I was overheating after a short walk in it. And that was without bibs on. The Khumbu will be a furnace. I am curious to see what you think of the jackets.
I have and love the Fanatic for whitetail stand hunting but it is heavy. The Axis paired with the SD Pro will be as warm and lighter. Most other puffy options from hunting and non hunting companies with similar amounts of down will do the same. The Skre Ptarmigan puffy has more down, is warmer...
Don’t mind the insurance. What annoys me is their shipping takes forever. From the time I place an order it takes at least two weeks before it is delivered.
Yes I bought the Guardian. I have not had a chance to hunt in it but have worn it in 10 - 20 degree weather four times, about an hour each time.
It is warm and lightweight. Definitely warmer and lighter than the Fanatic, Incinerator and Sanctuary. The jacket paired with the Guardian bibs...
Skre Guardian jacket and bibs. I have the Incinerator and it is not in the same league as far as warmth as the Guardian. You cannot beat down for cold weather stand hunting.
For the head Kuiu Kenai bomber hat over a First Lite Tundra balaclava. For the hands Sitka Incinerator muff with heat...
Lenz electric socks. Very expensive but no cold feet. You can adjust the heat settings manually or with a phone app. I originally tried them in my waders for winter steelhead fishing and they worked great. You don’t have to mess with boot blankets or heat packs and can wear less clunkier boots.
It just depends on how long you want to stay warm. Shell on the outside will keep you the warmest for the longest period of time. But if you wear the puffy on the outside you might stay warm long enough to serve your purpose. You just need to experiment with your layering a bit to get a feel...
The older you get the longer that two hour drive will feel especially if it is a one day trip.
I have leased the same property since the late 80s. For about the first 15 years it was only a 25 minute drive and I hunted the land frequently. After that my drive was 75 minutes and as the years...
