I cubed mtn lion backstraps into chislic meat and fried it in a skillet with butter and seasonings. Nothing special for seasonings. Was decently tender and had good flavor.
Everything else, I ground into burger. The pulled pork idea sounds good though
The first time I tried cooking mtn lion...

I have a winchester 1892 in .44 mag. It has a 20" barrel.
Don't remember my specific load right now but with 240 grain Nosler JSP and H110 powder, I was getting around 1700 FPS
I haven't been able to find any to try them, but I've heard Speer's 'deep curl' jacketed soft points are tough bullets.
They make them in 240 grain and 270 grain and are a bonded bullet.
I would also go with the Swift A-frames in 240 or 280 grain if a person could find them.
I've had luck using H4350 in my .280AI. I'm shooting 160 grain accubonds and using 53.7 grains of powder. Average velocity is about 2825 FPS with a magnetospeed chrono
Couldn't find IMR 7828SSC, RL 23, or RL 26. So I figured why not try H4350, it's used in .280 Rem and what I use reloading for...
I've also heard rumors of them being seen in the Bighorns the last couple years. I'm not surprised as they have been moving farther into the Wyoming range as well.
Id recommend finding a used one off the classifieds, craigslist, marketplace, etc. See how you like it and get used to it.
Some game & fish departments now have outdoor education centers where you might be able to try them to figure out what you like...
If you're wanting to camp out of it, Id...
With how mild this winter has been, you should be able to get to those elevations. I agree with wyosam, the south slopes should be melted off. I'd guess the north slopes and the timber will still have snow. And I wouldn't be surprised to see feet of snow in the timber in between parks and south...
Congrats on the move.
I don't live there anymore but spent 4.5 years in Rapid City while in college. Usually make it back there once or twice per year to visit friends. City is growing fast.
Great public land access and lots of variety for the outdoorsman.
I spent a ton of time deer and elk...
I'd probably recommend an aluminum canoe.
I grew up with canoes, so I prefer them over kayaks.
I have a 17' alumacraft canoe from the 70s that I enjoy. Mine has a yoke for transportation/portage. Supposed to weigh 60-65 lbs. Picture below.
I used a similar canoe in the boundary waters and .5...
Almost 2 years ago, I was picking between these 2 scopes for a rifle I had just picked up. I'd say both are good scopes, and that it comes down to personal preference.
I went with the VX5 and have had no complaints
Yeah I understand that reality. I hunted the Black Hills a ton during college and got my first cow elk in the hills. After college I moved to Wyo so I could hunt elk every year
I'd say you're on the right track, e-scout topo maps of the area first for saddles, funnels, etc.
Mark those areas you think would hold elk. Then put boots on the ground in summer to see if your e-scouting spots do hold elk/have elk sign.
