I consider the King's XKG thermolite jacket on sale for $50 a steal. I normally have my thermolite jacket on under an outer layer, so I haven't been concerned about noise. However, it is a soft thin polyester shell. I suspect it is not much different than the Sitka with them both being...
We hunt northern Wisconsin. For years I had cold feet no matter what boots I tried. Then I bought the SKRE Guardian jacket and bibs. Problem solved. I wear a simple 400g lace up, and with the SKRE gear, I'm toasty warm to waaay below zero.
I have been real happy with Kings XKG Windstorm rain jacket. I like the fit and quiet material. Breathes pretty good also. If I don't have a down puffy in my pack, I usually have the Kings Thermolite jacket. It's warm, packs down small, and breathes well.
You should also check out the SKRE Ptarmigan jacket. Water repellant 850 fill down. https://skregear.com/collections/jackets-vests/products/ptarmigan-ultra-down-summit
I've had comfortable nights on a Nemo Tensor Insulated wide. Light and small pack size. If you're using it in cool weather, make sure whatever you get is insulated.
When seating, always make sure you are doing the same amount of speed and pressure on the press handle. Inconsistent press operation will cause varying seating depths. Just one more thing to check.
I'd be using my Marlin 444P with a red dot or a quality 2-7 scope for sentimental reasons! I think any lightweight bolt gun with a shorter barrel and low power optic would also be nice. I'm thinking maybe a Kimber Hunter or Savage Lightweight Hunter with an 18-20" barrel in 358 would be cool.
The factory recoil pad is actually pretty good. My rifle comes in at 6.5 pounds scoped, so there is some recoil and jump. Unless you could load up some 120 BT's at modest velocity, I'm not sure it would be a great first rifle. What's the build of your youth hunter? Kids now-a-days seem to be...
I feel your pain. Its been raining for two days here and nothing but mud outside. Normally it would be winter here in Wisconsin, but the last couple years have been crazy. I think it's 45F out today!
I don't know what kind of hunting you plan, but when I hear real short barrel I think 358 Winchester. Your not gonna make 600 yards, though. One of the short 6.5's or 7's seems the way to go. I'd still want more barrel than 16" though.
We should be coming up on breeding season soon which may make it a bit easier. If this drags out long enough (May??) I'd work a lot of coyote pup distress calls.
Yep. I just measured mine also. If you get right out to the end of the taper I was looking at 0.560". It may not make any difference what caliber, but mine is a 7mm-08.
Hey Newtosavage. I know this thread is getting a bit old, but I just bought a Storm lightweight and have a 33mm objective scope for it. I was just wondering what height Talley rings you went with? I assume you got the Talley lightweights.
