Lot of good points on both sides of this discussion. We were all new elk hunters, and new to forums at some point, so 99% of the time I ignore post that annoy me, but yeah, it gets old as hell.
Sure you can ask for help, please do, but do your research first, then come here and ask questions...
This would make me nervous, it's progressively harder to keep hiking steep uphills day after day after day, they soon look intimidating and make camp seem oh so comfortable :)
I know what you're saying, but I'd like to see how you feel in 2 or 3 years.....it's no issue when you're new to the forum but after a while, say 2-3 years, it gets really, really old.
Every newbie should take it to heart.....if going in a group, some things are non-negotiable like leaving early unless all vote in favor, basically no plans are changed unless all agree. You get homesick? Tough, we aren't going anywhere, period, don't even ask.
Many moons ago, I slept on the ground in a sleeping bag without a ground pad, did this for 3 or 4 years, until I finally decided enough was enough. Kinda funny thinking back on it.
Seriously, I wish new users would get an email with rokslide etiquette......use the search functionality before asking the same d@mn question that's been thrashed to death in 40 other threads, only give and receive info about specific units via pm, etc.....
Why can't the mods do this?????
I would put the odds of a 1st time elk hunter with 5 days to hunt, killing an elk, at 1% or less, it’s tough. And if you’re ruling out country within a mile or two of the truck, the odds drop further. Not trying to rain on your parade, just being realistic.

First time elk hunting and carrying everything on your back don't go together at all. Please post up a recap after the hunt, would like to hear how it went.
I only fly (right for some, wrong for others), I have brought the antlers as another piece of checked luggage, but now I just give them away in CO and only bring the meat back, I don't need any more antlers.
I have driven once before, but never again...it was 27 hours one way, and at the end of...
TONS of nonres hunters don't scout, they escout, as making a trip out west just for scouting is almost impossible money wise and vacation wise for most folks. It's all most nonres folks can swing to hunt out west. Yes, you can get there a few days early, but vacation time is super tight for most.
Agreed, I'm sorry, but for long time members, these same questions over and over and over become increasingly annoying (if you stick around, you'll be there one day), but the flip side to that is we were all forum newbies at some point. Oh yeah and never mention a specific unit (but it happens...
I'm not trying to run you off, but most folks react strongly to having a stick with an optic on it pointed at them or reading about the same. The folks being pointed at don't know it's unloaded, bolt out. Maybe you wouldn't mind looking thru binos to see someone pointing a stick with an optic...
I just recently replaced my heavy 338 WM with a 6lb Tikka Superlite in 300 WM. I shoot Norma Bondstrike factory ammo out of it, it's the first ammo I tried, 60% of my 3 shot groups are sub MOA, which I'm ecstatic with, way good enough for me. I feel no need to touch it, it's 100% stock and...
