1st gun for 12 year old

I am looking for some input on make and model of a bolt action gun for my son's 12th birthday. I am strongly biased to .270 Win. since I already have one and having a duplicate caliber for ammo swap would be of bennifit. As far as budget is concernd, I have some flexibility here, but don't...

Do you bring a Sat phone/SPOT etc?

ACR Beacon for me. Not so concerned for me, but it gives the supportive wife peace of mind, and would be selfish of me not to take precautions so I can be there for the kids. I do prefer the one way communication. One of the main benefits of hunting wilderness to me is to disconnect from the...

    Which tent for backcountry 2013?

OK, thanks. Makes sense. Ran my SL5 for late season deer hunt this year, so still fiddling with it. Have a wood-burning stove on the way, so keep trying to add to the versatility and keep the weight down. By the way, where did you end up placing your stove jack in the SL5? are you happy...

    First aid/emergency kit overhaul

I have not taken antibiotics for the same reasons Becca states. I do, however, take meds to treat symtoms such as pseudofed, nyquil gel tabs, Immodium AD, etc. I have used these more than once to make a bad situation better and saved the hunt. Very little weight and worth it!

    Big comfy pad time...

I concur on the 3.5". My downmat 9 fits the bill nicely. Heavy, but warm and comfy. Got the Synmat UL7 this year to cut weight, but won't use again when it gets cold. Used it on a late season with temps getting to near 0 F.....was wishing I had the downmat 9. Both great pads, will use the 7...

    Which tent for backcountry 2013?

Luke, What do you do for trekking poles when you leave the tent in one spot for more than a day? With a bum knee, I need a pole when running about from a fixed spike camp.

    Water filter?

Thanks Luke for the reply. I think I'll keep mine in the bag for now since it has not froze there, even down in single digit temps. Still a little skittish on freezing the filter element and increasing the size of the filter holes allowing more bugs through. Maybe I'll consider a short lenth...

    Water filter?

Luke, I am using the same filter and setup for the past two years and have been happy. I like the idea of getting the higher pressure by moving the filter closer to the bite valve, however I did not set mine up that way due to fear of freezing the filter and either breaking it or destroying...
