Third year in a row with no draw luck. Chosen unit used to require 1pp for NR with a chance to draw w/ zero. Hope the quality is still there once I do finally draw. OTC elk is now on the menu. I'm certain I'll see a giant velvet buck standing broadside at 40y flippin me the bird!
If I fail to draw my CO buck tag I may shed a few tears, lol. I miss the mountains. I've tried OTC elk hunting a few times and enjoy it but, Mule deer have me hooked! I skipped out on western hunting last year (Didn't draw my tag) and hunted OH whitetail instead and might have to go that route...
Anyone else becoming increasingly nervous about next weeks draw? With the reported surge in applications my confidence has taken a hit. Really hoping to chase a few velvet bucks in September!
With ZERO elk to my name, this past season was my fourth trek to CO in pursuit of the elusive wapiti. Each of the previous three seasons offered A LOT opportunities that I managed to blunder due to inexperience and the overwhelming pressure to succeed. The pressure was all ME. Being a successful...
2019 CO archery buck. Solo at the time so the grip and grin photos didn't happen. Taken on 9/8/19 around 3:45 PM right after a hard rain shower. First buck on my first Muley tag!
Going into CO archery elk season #4 with my Danner Pronghorn's (un-insulated). I'm not scaling 14er's but they have a lot of miles and still feel great. Did a 3.5 mile pack hike in them last night.
To clarify a bit on my question, lets assume you're on foot and want to stick to one unit. @ElkNut1, What are your thoughts on distance between spots. You mentioned you have over 40 you can check out. How many are you capable of checking in a day, assuming you're on foot. Is it as simple as your...
Curious to know what folks consider a "Spot" How far away from your A spot is your B, C, D, etc. Spot? If my A spot is a bust, but I have another location in same unit that is 1 mile away, is that a B spot or still part of A?
Basically, how far apart should the be to be considered separate spots?
This season will be my 5th year heading out west on an CO OTC elk tag. Elk hunting was always something I thought I'd enjoy doing ONCE for the experience. Well, turns out I really enjoyed that first OTC Elk hunting experience and have been going just about every year since. Before I went on my...
Appreciate all the new comments. To answer a few new questions and update you on our plans. A little long, slightly off topic, but I think this thread will be helpful for others as well:
"WE" Recently decided to wait another year before he goes elk hunting -
* He'll still be really young...
Appreciate the feedback. My son isn't big for his age so 20# might be on the high end on his ability. As long as he can pack in his food/bow/clothes I'll handle the rest. I'll be sure he gets in several training hikes with me to get a feel for the pack weight. I've mentioned the InReach to the...
