    Another DIY Stove

Nice-I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Having a stove in the tent when it’s cold is definitely good. Jeremy

    Another DIY Stove

dog812- I do have some pictures, but struggle now to figure out getting them into a post since photobucket crapped out. I have an imgur account, but last time I tried to put pics in a thread, it just added some link instead... Jeremy

    Another DIY Stove

I ended up buying the Ti for the body of the stove (I did 15” long) from LiteOutdoors and the stove pipe from TiGoat after searching all over for good shimstock prices. I had great customer service from both and got to use my home made stove for the first time last weekend in the hills. Actually...

    Another DIY Stove

That 1008/1010 indicates it’s carbon steel shim stock, I believe. Not stainless. Probably why it’s so much cheaper. Jeremy

I need a new stove. Which one?

Used my Kovea Spider for the first time this season and really liked it. I wanted the convenience of a canister stove with the ability to use it even if it got really cold. Supposedly the remote canister setup allows you to do that by inverting the canister. I haven’t had to try that, but the...

    Is my sleep system adequate?

I just got back from some hunting for the first time with some synthetic quilts I made for me and my boys. I used the 30 degree rated insulation and realized afterwards I wish I’d gone with warmer... I chose to get some of the Costco down blankets for $20 each and we used those inside the...

    sewing machine / thread

I used a standard machine to sew mine in. I used Gutterman brand 100% polyester thread. I believe it was the Mara 70? I can never remember between it and the 50-I used the thinner of the two and I believe a number 14 needle. Jeremy

    Games to pass the time?

Those travel cribbage boards are pretty cool. I think one of those will be in my future as will the travel Farkle one. Looked up crazy 8’s and I think we’ll be trying that one out. Darned near Uno but with a regular deck. Old maid is an easy fun one too. Thanks for all the help, it’s...

    Games to pass the time?

These are some good ideas. For cribbage, what kind of board do you pack in? We have one, but it’s fairly large and heavy. Uno could be a good one and I’ve never played farkle, but it looks like it could be a fun one to take, too. Thanks again for the help. Jeremy

    “Light” for me :)

Thanks for the suggestions-they’re appreciated. The pads are only 19 or so ounces, so that’s fairly decent. The older boy is going in with me first and he’s going to carry his own quilt and some other stuff. I started making up the bags of food tonight and realized quickly that’s going to add...

    Games to pass the time?

I’m getting ready to back pack in for the first time with the kids. Filling a couple deer tags is the goal, first my oldest, and then me. I’m staggering the boys; oldest needs to get his deer, then they swap out and younger one comes out with me. ’ve tried to plan and we should be dry and warm...

    “Light” for me :)

So, this probably is far from actually lightweight for many of you. However, I’m about to take my first foray into the lighter version of things and hiking in. I made quilts for me and the kids. I made a silpoly pyramid tent and a tarp. I also made a titanium cylinder stove. My kids are still...

    Tent fabric....poly vs sil

LBFowler- I don’t know if more/better shelters are built out of nylon vs polyester. And I can’t say how much stronger the nylon is vs the polyester. I know about the charts on RSBTR’s site and it helps with figuring some of those differences along with stretch, HH, etc. That being said, I was...

    Tent fabric....poly vs sil

I don’t think I have the perspective you’re looking for and I’m really curious to hear what others have to say about the different materials. I went with the silpoly XL from RSBTR for my pyramid. One of the main reasons I decided on it instead of silnylon was its apparently more hydrophobic than...

    Pyramid Tent WIP

It’s a good question-mid be the more circular tipi. I haven’t spent any nights in either, so take this all with a grain of salt... From what I understand, a tipi can shed the wind better because of its shape. The mid has the big triangular sides that can really catch the wind, from what I...

    Pyramid Tent WIP

Kindo- You’ve got to make the tent, mine was a great project and learning experience for me. It is all finished up, including seam sealing. I made a stuff sack for it and with some guy line in there, it all weighs 3 lbs. The only thing I wish I’d done differently (so far) is to have made the...

    Redneck Pad Thai Backpacking Meal

That doesn't sound half bad at all. Thanks for posting up the idea. I've been cruising different sites and this sub-forum for good meal ideas. This fall will be the first backpacking trip in with my kids and there have been a lot of helpful recipes. Jeremy

    Pyramid Tent WIP

It's dangerously close to done, now. I've sewed on so many stake down, guy out, and reinforcement points that I'm glad it's about finished. The vents and stove jack are all sewn in. The only thing that has to be done is making one more vent hood and sewing both on. Then it's seam sealing time...

Ruta Locura 710 CF tipi pole

My pole is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I'd emailed him a few months back with questions on size for the pyramid I had planned to make. He gave great info and encouraged me to make the tent first to ensure the right height pole in case seam allowances made the measurements different. Now that...

    What size stove jack?

This may not be super helpful, but figured I might suggest sewing your own stove jack? I'm close to finishing a pyramid tent and just about bought a ready made stove jack. Then I ran into stove jack material. A few different places sell it, I ended up buying it from ripstopbytheroll. It was only...
