    sewing tarps

I actually had a thread with pics of the tarp and some quilts I made, but photobucket screwed it all up. Since then, I’ve struggled with imgur and my apple devices to figure out how to best get pics thrown into threads... Don’t know if a description will help, but here’s what I did. I ordered...

    Center Pole/ Trekking Pole

I got one for my DIY pyramid and I like it a lot. The tent is just over 11’ square and a bit over 7’2” at the peak. He suggested the largest diameter pole for how large my tent is. I think the quality of the pole is very good and only have one minor complaint. When I put the pieces together (the...

    Costco packable throws on sale

I got 3 of these earlier this year and used them up hunting to help on the chilly nights. They worked great and pack down to about nothing. For $15, you can’t really go wrong. Jeremy

    DIY Stove Bag?

Thanks for the suggestions guys-I appreciate it. I may have to go to the fabric store and see if there’s anything that would fit the bill or go online for some cordura or something. Thanks again. Jeremy

    Tent design

^^^^This. I don’t think I’d say I had trouble getting the silpoly to feed through my machine, but feeding CONSISTENTLY is a whole different story. After all the projects I did, the biggest thing I found to controlling stitch length was the pressure I kept on both sides of the presser foot and...

    Tent design

Mine is an old 1950’s machine-I just set it on max for the stitch length. I think it’s probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 8-9 stitches per inch. Jeremy

    Tent design

What he said ^^^^. I figured out fairly early on that the peak was going to be a little wonky. As I continued stitching the panels and then walls together, there’s no way (for me) to keep things totally even. I got it all pretty well complete, then I folded the excess down so it was on the...

    DIY Stove Bag?

For you guys who’ve made your own stoves and the accompanying bags for storage and packing on the trip, what material did you use? I had some uncoated 1.9 Ripstop nylon that I used. The bag for the end plates, cable rings, etc is just fine. The one for the Ti body and pipe is not fine... The...

    Anyone hunt in solids?

Green pants and black fleece top. My binos have a little camo piece of material for the harness that’s on my chest, so I suppose there’s that. I should say I’m hunting with a rifle and wanted some pants that didn’t cost a fortune, would dry fast, and didn’t get cheat grass and burs stuck to...

    Tent design

I made the four panels and then joined them together. I also went from the peak down, figuring it would be easier to make adjustments at the bottom edge when I rolled and stitched it vs trying to deal with that at the peak. I think it was mainly due to my cutting, but I had an offset at the...

    New hunting knife recommendations

The knife I’ve used the last two years is a fixed blade I made out of 80CRV2 carbon steel. So far, I’m rewlly liking it. Cut up two deer with it and all that’s been done afterwards is some swipes on the kitchen steel. The steel takes a very nice edge and retains it well with the bonus of being...

    Another DIY Stove

I grabbed some stainless wing nuts but got regular allthread that I’m sure was just the zinc coated type. I know about the dangers of the “fumes” that come off that when heated up, so I just made sure to keep clear of it for a while when I burned the stove in. Jeremy

    DIY sleeping bag mod question

I think the elastic straps would be a decent way to go. You could also cut the current “sleeve” and add in another piece of lightweight material to widen it if you didn’t want to deal with the stretch from the elastic? Jeremy

I could certainly be wrong, but I’m betting it’s Ripstopbytheroll.com. I got my stuff from them-not sure if the XL Fabric is also sold elsewhere? Jeremy

    Diy tipi tent vent size

I tried weed trimmer line and it didn’t work so well for me. It ended up wanting to coil back up and not keep the vent hood arched up. I then went to some strips I cut off of those thin flexible cutting boards. It worked okay, but when I found some long zip ties, I tried those and they worked...

How to improve sleeping bag warmth?

I used the $20 Costco down blanket inside my quilt this year. I used 30 F rated insulation when I made the quilts for me and he kids. REALLY wish I’d used the warmer stuff.... The weight of the Costco blanket pretty much negated any I’d saved going with the lighter insulation. The blanket worked...

    Tent design

I’m not certain I’m following. When I made my pyramid, I sewed two right triangles together to make one wall. That center seam was what I checked for as the hypotenuse when figuring out my lengths of fabric to cut. The center pole was the “straight leg” of the triangle in the sketchup drawing...

    Tent design

Yup, you’ll be about 9’6” square footprint without the seam allowances. Depending on what kind of seams you end up using, I could see that bumping down to 9’3” pretty easily. I made mine out of the 1.1 silpoly XL and my peak height is a bit over 7’2”. One thing to remember is you’re going to...

I am struggling with my tent decision.

This year was my first time hiking in a bit, then setting up camp and hunting from there. Spent a couple nights out there with my young kids in my DIY pyramid tent. We also had the 15” Ti stove I made and I was thankful for it. The first night was REWLLY windy, cold, and snowed on and off. When...

    Straight cuts

I made a pyramid tent earlier this year and had the same problem. I thought about a chalk line to mark my long lines, but figured it wouldn’t work for some reason because of the silicon coating. Like the chalk would move easily and not actually mark it. Then I saw someone’s thread later on and...
