Need suggestions on details for my DIY tarp

Hmmm, good question. I ended up gluing on the patches and am going to stitch the grosgrain later. I wanted to roll the edge all the way around and stitch the reinforcement patches, which leaves me sewing the grosgrain on at the end. I could easily be wrong, but I'm not sure there's any big...

    My Recent Projects

Adventures in Sewing I also wanted a tarp for a back up shelter, one to take out with me hunting and hide under for weather rolling through, etc. I got the 1.1 silpoly 2nds (nice and cheap) and got it stitched down the center, joining the two 10' pieces. It's around 9'6" wide and 10' long...

    My Recent Projects

With a lot of help from people on this site, I tackled making my own stuff to be able to go backpack hunting with the kids. I sold a canvas pyramid tent I had to help fund all the materials I wanted to get. I ordered everything from Ripstop By the Roll and started with 3 quilts. I ordered 5.0...

Need suggestions on details for my DIY tarp

Thanks, Beendare. I actually have some 3/8" grosgrain, might need to get some more for this and the tent later on. Since I have the 1 oz Robic, I think I may just give that a whirl for the reinforcements. It's the same weight(ish) as the tarp material, but stronger. And since I think I've...

Need suggestions on details for my DIY tarp

For the grosgrain (or whatever material is used), how long are the "tails" that get sewn onto the tarp itself? Is there a point at which it's fairly meaningless as far as helping distribute the force put on by staking or tying out? Is 2" of sewn on grosgrain enough, more=better? Hope that makes...

Need suggestions on details for my DIY tarp

Oh, and how big do you guys suggest making the reinforcement patches? And how long for the straps to sew in the tie outs from the edges? Jeremy

Need suggestions on details for my DIY tarp

Thanks everyone for the information-it's really helpful. And Squirrels, no worries. Your questions are the same things I've been thinking of and wondering. Chukar-thanks for the advice on sewing up the pyramid. When I was doing the seam on the tarp yesterday, I found my brain began hurting a...

Need suggestions on details for my DIY tarp

So, I got my 3 apex quilt kits done and moved to the silpoly tarp. I wanted one, but also thought it would be a good way to practice before tackling the pyramid I have planned. So, I used the full width of the silpoly I got and cut two pieces 10' long. I managed to get the center seam done...

    Diy quilt build

That looks great, thanks for posting it up. I got my first one done, the second is about 2/3 finished. Then one more after that. I ended up deciding on the sewn in foot box. Guess we'll see how me and the kids like it.... Now that yours is finished, how do you feel about the design? I'm curious...

    Diy shelter question

I've got several yards of 1.1 silpoly that I ended up buying from Ripstop by the Roll. I plan to reinforce all the tie out points and am going to sew in a stove jack. Jeremy

Flydaho- That's some sound advice. I'd be curious for what your footprint ended up being. I've fiddled around on sketchup which has certainly helped with measurements, calculating angles, etc. I want to be able to have room for 3 of us, but that's primarily going to be me and a couple of kids...

Thanks, guys-I can't thank you enough for sharing your experiences. Will make my tent a ton better and should mitigate those feelings of "I wish I'd done this different..." :). Jeremy

mfllood- Thanks for the information on the Redcliff. It looks like a rally nice tent. I've been planning on vents and yours is advertised as being closable. I can't seem to find any close ups or details on how exactly it functions. I'd love to incorporate the option of closing them-any...

Good stuff. I appreciate all of the comments and ideas. Anyone else have strong feelings one way or the other on those corner tie out points up a little ways? I'm curious if they help significantly in the wind like I've heard. Jeremy

Your favorite features on your tipi

Thanks, Mischief. I'm planning two vents with the noseeum netting and a zipper that goes most of the way to the peak with two zipper pulls. That way I can zip down from the top for more drafting if I really feel like it. I'm also planning two tie out points on the walls just like you said-about...

Your favorite features on your tipi

I've been figuring out the details for my DIY tipi for a while now and was just thinking about adding tie out points further up from the ground on the corners. I'd read where some guys like having them for heavy winds. I thought I'd double check here, then realized I might be missing a great...
