I am currently using the Hornady ELD-X precision hunter ammo in my 6.5 PRC. It shoots great and by far the most accurate factory ammo I have shot. However, my son and I went on a caribou hunt last year and we both ended up shooting caribou through the front shoulder and it seemed as if the...
The caribou post was my oldest son, I also took my now 11 year old son on his first hunt for hogs when we lived in Texas. While not as physically demanding as the caribou hunt, it was a great time and we had tons of fun. I was able to take out all three of my boys and my nephew along with my dad...
I took my 12 year old son the hunt the Dalton Highway for Caribou last year. It was his fist big game hunt and my first real hunt in Alaska. Neither of us had ever seen a Caribou before, nor have we ever done any hunt that would require us to carry our camps on our back and stay out overnight...
I used a good comfortable pair of rubber boots. Rough on your feet for the amount of walking you will have to do on the tundra but better than walking in wet boots all day. One thing to be careful of, we crossed a couple small creeks on our way out. It was no problem with rubber boots and only a...
Do you think that its not a wise idea to venture that late in the year in the 2wd dually?
I went up the 1st week of Sept and there wasn’t any snow at all going through the pass. On the way back everything was covered in snow and the road was pretty slick. Hard to say what you would run into but...
I agree, I did this hunt in Sept and the first day was sunny and 60 and the next rainy and 30’s. You never know what weather you will get, but I would plan for warm weather in Aug and definitely bring the cooler with ice. Too late once you are already there.
I hear ya, there were definitely moments where I was questioning my decision to do that hunt. I think I will personally stick to bow hunting that area, but I have a buddy who wants to do the rifle thing, so I will help him pack out this year. Then I will bow hunt mine from the road!
My son and I hunted up there last fall and did the 5 mile hike in. Honestly I believe you would be causing yourself more heartache by dragging along a cart. I would imagine you would be constantly getting stuck on or between the tussocks. We ended up both getting a caribou. We put everything on...
I took my 12 year old son up to the haul rd for a caribou hunt despite all the advise against it. It ended up being a great trip. We hiked 5 miles out on the west side of the rd. We lucked out and had beautiful weather on the way out and it was a great time. Took us about 6-7 hours and was...
