I shipped a tanned bear hide there from Alaska this past year. The finished product was great and I am happy overall. I did have some communication issues and the timeline kept shifting. They use a separate taxidermist for the head and then they finish rugging the bear. The answer that I got was...
Mountain boots and gaiters will get you through most of it. I have run through some sections where standing water up your calf is everywhere and rubber boots have done well in those situations. Last time I did the 5 mile hike, I wore rubber boots and my two buddies wore kenetreks and gaiters. I...
I have been up there the past 4-5 years in a row. Done the 5 mile hike several times and took an airboat up the Ivishak this past year and have never seen a wolf. I did however see some wolf tracks along the river last year. They are there but your chances of seeing one are pretty slim. Then...
I have personally seen two brown bears taken with a 30-06. Neither one made it more than 60 yards. Good shot placement and bullet selection and your 7 PRC will be fine. Make a poor shot or poor bullet choice maybe not.
Was definitely ready to call it quits a few times with it being just me and my daughter, but afterwards I definitely was glad we knocked it out. You’re right, feels much better sleeping in the next day knowing your meat is safe!
My daughter with her first moose! Wish I had more time to take better pics but she got this one right at dark and there were wolf tracks all over this area. We were kinda in a hurry and finished getting everything out by 5-6 AM. As we were hauling the last load out we heard a pack of wolves...
My son with his first Sitka Blacktail! We took a trip down to Prince of Wales Island with my dad for a father/son/grandfather trip. Unfortunately probably one of his last since he is getting up there in age and can’t get around like he used to. While we didn’t see many, my son getting his first...
We were there the 12-18th. We stayed with Thorne Bay Lodge and the guy who runs the place says that that is usually his best week. He believes that the peak of the rut the past few years is around the 15th. I personally didn’t see any rutting activity and the few bucks that we saw were by...
Just got back from a trip to Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. Spent most of my time trying to get my son his first buck, but I was lucky enough to get a nice one as well. Didn’t see a ton of deer but we had a great time!
This past year my daughter was lucky enough to get drawn for a youth moose hunt here in Alaska. We chose the 22-25th in hopes of catching the rut as we were informed that the rut in this are has been taking place later and later in the season. This was our first real moose hunt. I have done...
We just got back last week. Definitely the slowest I have seen in the past 4 years I have been up there. All four of us got a bull though. Still ended up being a great trip but we only saw 10-15 total in 7 days. Normally we see plenty, but we also normally go the 1st-2nd week of Sept.
This hunt we did. Usually I head up and bow hunt a little and hike out 5 miles with a rifle but this year we got dropped off about 40 miles up river and floated out. We all hunted with rifles this year.
Just got back. Caribou are definitely few and far between. Slowest I have ever seen up there. A group of four of us went up and all got our caribou but it definitely took a lot of work.
