Here’s something and buddy and I discovered on our own. Bears in north Idaho can have a wide color range, like JJ said. We noticed that when we spotted bears in clearcuts or glades (called parks in Montana, weirdos) they were black almost every time. Once in a great while see a dark chocolate...
Is it just me, or do the F&G surveys work like this?
Count 5 elk and 5 mule deer. Multiply both by 1,000 = 5,000 elk and 5,000 mule deer. Population of both is apparently great. No changes.
Count 4 wolves in one drainage. Assume this is all of the wolves with 100 miles. Report 4 in five...
Hikker’s advise is good. It isn’t so much about elevation. Spring comes to different elevations at different times every year so what you’re looking for is late April to mid-May and green. Once things start to green up down low sometimes you’ll find bears more concentrated in lower...
First 20 or so was in thick timber ranging from probably 10 to 80 yards. Started hunting more open country and now my average is probably 300. Not many over 500 but even fewer under 200.
Hood is correct. The drawing is only for a few units. Most of the state is over the counter. Spring spot and stalk bear hunts can be tons of fun if you hit the timing right. I would opt for the 1st or 2nd week of May at the earliest. For most of Idaho, the thicker the timber the higher the...
Agreed. That’s about the only access to that part of the Frank once the snow gets deep. It’s a heck of a long way from that bridge to anything that matters but it’s a lot closer than trekking clear over the Crags or coming down Monument Creek (which is probably snowed shut 8 months of the year.)
Yes to what the other posters have said. I don’t consider Pallisades to have a very high bear density, some but not a lot. The Pioneers are pretty open and dry and I wouldn’t go there for bears. The Panhandle is loaded with bears and access is good. If you’re interested, PM me and I’ll...
Supposedly the Forest Service is going rebuild the Stoddard Pack Bridge but they don’t plan on starting any sooner than summer 2020. Hopefully, they’ll follow through and we’ll get access back into that area within a few years.
The Frank Church is lousy with bears. My own personal hypothesis is that the wolves decimated the elk and deer populations and now the bears kill most of the calves and fawns, keeping the populations forever decimated. I’ve seen nowhere in Idaho with a higher bear population.
Ive never been...
