Mostly stay towards the eastern half of the state anywhere north of Salmon. Units 17, 15, 12, 10, 10A, all have good bear numbers. You’re right about the thicker country being harder to hunt. I believe that’s right but the flip side is, the thicker county probably holds more bears and early...
The 160 Accubonds out of a 7mmRM are really good bullets and (At least in my opinion) are probably going to provide More reliable penetration than the Berger’s. That being said, I have and continue to hunt with the 7mm 168 VLDs. They’ve always worked well for me on elk but if grizzlies were a...
Make sure you’re ready for anything in central Idaho mountains in September. I’ve seen it go from tee shirt weather to several inches of snow in a few hours. Layers of poly or wool with at least one nice warming jacket and another of top to bottom Rain gear.
I’ve seen a lot of security guards carry full size Glocks on drop holsters so there must be good ones out there. I generally put my G20 on my pack belt but recognize that parting from it can leave me vulnerable. Love my G20, it’s heavy with a full mag but it’s so simple and full of ammo I just...
I always wanted to try spot and stalk for a spring black bear. I appreciate the story, I gives me confidence that it’s possible. What an accomplishment!

I’m guessing that not many folks have outfitter recommendations for you. I have one outfitter that guided me last fall. He hunts Western Montana and he’s a great guy who will work hard to get you a bear. If you’re interested, I’ll email him and ask him if he’s guiding Montana next spring (I...
Idahohikker is right on with this, June is late. The hides tend to be rubbed out and you don’t see many bears. April is often too early in many places because the grass really hasn’t started growing in the openings and the roads still have too much snow on them.
Nothing wrong with the reduced...
I believe the reduced price tags are for areas where they want fewer bears. Many of the reduced price units in the panhandle have large bear populations but deer and elk populations below desired numbers, thus reduced price tags. Probably the same in the Frank Church.
Unless you’re a resident in AK you’ll have to hire a guide. My guide required 338 Win Mag as a minimum with quality 225gr or greater bonded, monos (Barnes Triple Shocks, etc), or Partitions or A-Frames. If you’re really serious, you might want to book your hunt and then follow your guides...
Lots of good info in this thread (bad behavior and hurt feeling not withstanding). I’m by no means a grizzly expert, not even really a player by many counts. I hunt and camp near and around Yellowstone in Idaho and Montana, so even though I’ve not had any issues with them, they’re an ever...
Luckily, the good Lord made me with a middle finger for just such an occasion. I’ve done as you have and left an area after such interactions but have less tolerance of these days. Of course, every situation is different, when I’m with my young sons, I avoid every possible confrontation.
You...
Yep. Exactly. Cup and cores (like ELDxs, or Ballistic Tips) can often produce dramatically different results from one shot to the next. You’re right, that’s why Joe Blough says “these bullets are junk”, and Jim Bow says, “best bullets ever”! When used in similar circumstances. Bonded bullets...
Lots of folks around Yellowstone carry both a handgun and pepper spray for defense against bears, The grizzlies cause way more problems than black bears. Way more, like 99+% of the problems are grizzlies. When I’m not in grizzly country, I ignore bears completely. They are awesome at avoiding...
Never have put an elk in a cooler, just never had reason. When I put antelope in coolers, I buy blocks of ice to at least mostly cover the bottom of the cooler, lay a heavy trash bag over the ice and throw the meat on top. I alway pull the plug on the cooler to let water drain out. It’s not a...
In Idaho in the fall, by September, most of the huckleberries are gone and with the exception of blue elderberries that grow along the roads (which the bears shred quite often making it easy to see if there are bears around) most of the berry bushes and chock cherries are along the creek beds...
8-1 and 8-2 have some elk but lots of private land issues. 66 is way overhunted due to proximity to Idaho Falls and general tags. I don’t know much about 68 but would opt for one of the others.
There’s almost no access to Unit 20-A anymore since the bridge went out that crosses the Salmon...
Timber,
You’re picking a very good area to find bears and there shouldn’t be many people around. If it were me, I would plan on finding creeks, preferably intersections of creeks, and finding vantage points up high to glass along the stream beds in the late afternoons and evenings. Any other...
Selway is right on with this. The bears will practically pave the trails near creek bottoms with crap in the fall. Very seldom see a bear while out glassing for elk and deer. They’re in the berry patches late (probably early too). I’ve seen most bears in the fall in berry patches in the...
