Oh cool, didnt realize you were from MN.
Im largely an obsessive grouse hunter these days and thats what I am doing pretty much every day from the start of October until late Nov, but could always count on deer camp at my cabin in WI with my buddies to get some venison for the freezer...
I was living in Iowa at the time and they have an October early ML season with a small number of tags that not many people would apply for. I had a 3k acre section of public crawling with deer that I would often be the only one hunting. There was no rifle season back then so the other option was...
Never Elk hunted but have been working on putting together a trip. If I were going today I would be choosing between my 270 or 300wm (both M70) likely the 270 featherweight though. IM working on picking up a 308 though that could well get the nod by then.
Killed my first with a CVA wolf muzzle loader with iron sights. 2nd with an Optima. After that I was hunting in WI and used both a M94 30-30 and a M70 270. 270 has taken deer, never taken a shot with the 30-30, used to be a running joke that whichever gun I chose would be the wrong one for...
I like the crispis and am glad I bought them. I used them for WI rifle season this year and never had any kind of issue when walking. I think I did 6-7 sits longer than 2 hours, feet only got annoyingly cold once, pretty cold two other times. How your sitting, bloodflow etc matter.
In reality...
When buddies of mine were fretting about ounces I used to joke that I would just take a shit pre-hike and accomplish the same thing. Really though I do look at gear weight and dont fret over every little thing but lots of little things can add up a bunch on the total. I cut 10 lbs off my canoe...
I used the wild rocks for the fist time this year. I love the boots and they are fine when moving down to some really cold temps. Feet still get cold when sitting though. I dont think there is a boot thats really capable of being decent to hike in and also warm enough to sit. Next year I will...
The new nemo chair is very similar but solves for this. The Wrap it comes in has spots for the feet to attach making a footprint the size of the whole base and avoiding sinking.
Its still a pain for super quick set up though.
I dont quite fit that progression, I for sure recall the shooter stage, never really was all about the limit stage. I was deep in the method stage for a bit as the same time as the trophy stage and I think in many ways the two share the same motivation.
I am more in the sportsman stage I think...
Sort of.
My first passion is hunting ruff grouse. I have a cabin 2 hours from home in NW WI surrounded by great grouse covers (I had over 50 onx pins of spots I wanted to hunt this year). With starlink now I can work from there and I specifically avoid booking work travel for much of October...
I think with whitetail there is some variability depending on the animal's diet. Corn fed Iowa deer are not the same thing as Northern MN big woods deer in terms of what the meat is like. I would guess protein is close but fat content would have some variability I think. I just assume its all...
Spending time at or training at altitude is the best thing. But short of that the best you can do is get to relatively elite level VO2max. The problem with altitude is less oxygen and V02max is probably the best metric to help with that. Norwegian 4x4 sets on rower or bike twice a week in...
Every morning post workout I take 1 packet with my creatine mixed in with it in 20 oz water, kill two birds with one stone.
If I am dehydrated due to activity, long flights, etc I might take a 2nd one in the afternoon (or I really love their canned carbonated ones) but generally the 1 is fine.
