I’m originally from Ohio and have been on one elk hunt here in NM. The first time I had a mythical horse with small trees growing from its head scream at me within bow range was the day I knew that I couldn’t go back to tree stand hunting whitetails. I figure if a 240 inch bull (maybe) could do...
I did some rough math on building a dozen arrows from IW vs buying all the components from GoHunt and building them myself. I have none of the tools/components required to build my own arrows, I only own a jig to re-fletch arrows.
Depending on what arrow building tools I choose (Last Chance vs...
I’ve got two Proof barreled rifles. One is their rifle, the Elevation, chambered in 6.5CM. Consistent .4-.5 MOA with Hornady ELDM and ELDX on 10-15 shot groups.
Second is an AR I built myself. 18” .223 Wylde Proof barrel with a Triarc BCG in a DD stripped upper. I get varied results with that...
I enjoy my BX-5 15s but as other have said, the eye cups are not as nice as my Razor 10x42s. Bigger, father apart (I close my binos almost all the way), and not as cushioned. You could probably get used to it or may not notice, just something to think about.
I just used my Davis 14x15 for the first time, we got the elk package and upgraded to the bigger stove and better bags.
It was getting down into the low 20s/upper teens at night with a nice SE NM wind. Made it quite cold and we burned through a lot of wood, but the stove kept us comfortable if...
If I was buying/building one, I would get a 7 PRC if you handload. Anything from 6.5 PRC-300WSM will be a good do it all rifle that can put various game down at distance.
Look at the higher end Tikka's, Bergara's, and Savages to be well within your budget. If you can stretch, check out Fierce...
Yes, it is. They both have collars, but the one was not close enough to see it. The state released this pair in the Coronado NF in SW NM, much to the disdain of the numerous ranches in the area outside the forest. They were on the ranch land plains when I took those.
A rutting muley and his does
A pair of Mexican Gray Wolves
Two antelope- one with a wide load and one I call Fish Hooks
Some antelope does and their young ones back in the summer
This is why I asked more about the specifics of the barrel. I’ve heard those types of things as well, and both of my Proof barrels are shooters even with factory ammo. I don’t see a reason to go away from them at this point.
If I may- if you want the high performance that a .284 can give you, why would you not jump on the 7 PRC? I know you stated availability reasons but it’s not as if 280 AI is super popular. And in a year or two I think 7 PRC will be around at the same level if not more. 5 years from now it could...
Could you elaborate more on the specs and material of the barrel you chose? I’ve been considering building a 7 PRC myself and this will be a great project to shorten my learning curve.
I’ll definitely check that stuff out. Still curious about the Sitka muffs, I get a really generous discount from them. They don’t necessarily seem as durable though because they don’t have the 500D cordura face.
So far I’ve just been wearing Kuiu Guide X gloves underneath the Sitka stormfront...
Reviving this to ask if anyone has experience with the Hudson/Incinerator muffs from Sitka as well as the Marsupial muff? I run the Marsupial bino harness so it seems like a nice addition.
