I've put a few stove jacks in Mid type shelters and the larger Shangri La's. As close to the peak as possible is the best option for stability and getting the most from your stove. I would resist the urge to put it elsewhere even if its more convenient for floor space.
Hopefully you didnt pull the trigger on that. 3lbs was the first red flag for me, this is where you ask yourself "how much is an ounce (or 10) worth to me in US dollars, lol. If you are backpacking a lot you'll be looking to replace it soon. Good luck
I made a post in a few of the "Ballhead/panning head" and "tripod" threads. For half the price AND less weight you can have a setup that is just as functional...if you can do without the handle that goes with a panning head. This outdoorsman tripod and head setiup is obviously working for a few...
A Ti (or similar) minimalist bivy matched with a Sil tarp is as light as you can go. In Alaska it can be challenging to use such as your primary shelter like I did on last years sheep hunt where rain was a constant companion, it worked fine but there were challenges. I have made a few bivies and...
Wow, I will make the drive to Kluane and sheep mountain sometime. Thanks to you it will never live up to my expectations. What time of year was that?? Looks like early-mid July-ish :)
I just want a shot with 10 or 20 full curl rams thats all.
Plenty of close encounters with moose. On one occasion we packing up camp on the last day of hunting season anticipating the arrival of the Beaver to fly us home and a young bull walks into camp. I had to shoo him out of camp to get to the rest of the gear I was packing. 5 minutes later I heard...
Since I cant buy the Lowa Tibets in wide locally I usually just wait for the Shoebuy.com 20% off deal which comes up a couple times a year. If you know what you want and they have it then it's a no brainer. The Tibets in wide feel like they were made for my feet, it's backpacking bliss. In fact...
I made a post about some ballhead information here. Some of you are coughing up some serious buck for your heads, I think there are better options. Also wouldnt buy a Gitzo tripod just for spotter use, yes they are nice but not necessary, you could save a few bucks. I own a Slik Pro624cf for the...
I would take a close look at the benefits before dropping that kind of coin on a pan head. Really Right Stuff makes a great ultralight ballhead at a fraction of the price(also made in the USA). It has a panning base and after some use with your gear it is easy to achieve the proper tension. Im a...
For mountain hunts I use a Slik Pro624cf with the lower leg extensions removed. Really Right Stuff BH-25 Ultralight Ballhead.
Weighs 27.5 oz and extends to 30in, 15.5in collapsed
If you can kill a sheep in the Chugach with a bow you can kill one anywhere in Alaska with a bow.
I dont have any real experience/advice to offer as far as bowhunting the Brooks but if I were in your shoes and taking a ram was of upmost importance on this hunt I would probably take the rifle...
It was my dads turn to shoot in 2010. I was caller, knife and trophy clean up man. Last hour bull, last day of the season after calling in an extra day with the air charter, truly meant to be and my pops best bull. We didnt go last year but im up again, cant wait!!
