Western Hunter and Nate Simmons is like watching an academy award picture compared to a home movie with these guys. The day by day idea was a good one to the current short attention span of us all these days, but the BRO guys should really learn to elk hunt if they want to show everything...

Chasing the "rut" is not always your best bet to kill a bull.
As an example... My teenage son had an OR LE tag this year in an area I've hunted many times. We were into screaming bulls from labor day until the last day. Mostly morning and night. He did have lots of chances but didn't kill...
I agree with this and would add the situation probably dictates the best choice. Sure, if I am close to the truck(which is never) I might leave it on the bone. But the reality is the situation, how far you're packing the elk and how should answer your question. If you're packing an elk 3+ miles...
IMHO paint or masks are for youtube and IG pics. Might make you look cool to other humans, but the bulls don't give a chit ;) I've stood face to face with more bulls than I could remember and they don't spook from looking at your face. They spook from smell and or movement. Masks are hot and...
You'll kill a lot more herd bulls when you realize calling is only one of MANY tools in your bag. Usually not the best one when you're after the biggest bulls. With that said, bugling will work more often than cow call in your situation. But in order for that to work you have to be WAY inside...
Seriously!! On my backcountry elk hunts it's sleep, hunt, eat, sleep, hunt eat and I don't really have enough time for the eating and sleeping to stay caught up. Can't imagine finding time for fishing :)
Never said I mad, was just making the point that if they posted results a few days earlier(before June 1) it would really help out al lot of NRs. What was the CO deadline, 2 months ago? ;) They need 60 days to git'er done? 😂 Seems they could do the NRs a solid and come out a week earlier...
Already screwed up OR and WY by waiting until after the 1st. Going to screw ID if they wait until after tmrw, so yeah a few days has probably ruined a few hunts.
"It will cost the state a lot of money on OTC tags though which im sure will upset them. "
Just because they make all the units a draw does not mean there would be less tags. It could/should just mean they will be able to control the number of hunters in each unit rather than allowing the OTC...

Your own words just proved my point! "While I haven't sealed the deal on a big herd bull, I've called several off their cows to me and into shooting range. "
It's not about calling a bull in(when he now knows you're there) it's about KILLING them! Best way to kill a herd bull is when...
If you want to kill a big herd bull then give up on the idea of calling him to you, and let him call you to him. Too many guys get all caught up in "calling in" elk. The goal is to kill the biggest bull in the woods. The calling him in tactic is not usually the best and if it's your only play...
FYI things have changed a lot in the last couple of years. You used to be able to mt bike in and camp on the timber company land in the Norgard area(entire West side of the unit), but now the timber company does not allow any camping on their land during archery season because of fires. This...
I don't have a lot of MT data to go on. Only hunted it once 2 years ago on a general tag. But... I was into mature bulls every day in multiple different units and passed on about a dozen up to 300ish trying to get a good one. It seemed to me to be about on par with the other states I hunt...
So this is how I did it with him... I had him practice shooting with the Remington low recoil rounds. The recoil was nothing for him even when he was 10-11 and small. Then for his first elk hunt when he was 12 I took the gun and sighted it in myself with the 140gr accubond federal ammo. I didn't...
