The bears won't likely be in the creek bottoms. You'll need to gain elevation. You'll wish you had a spotter if you don't bring it. Stalks can be multi-day affairs in that country, and it's nice to know what you're going after before you commit.
It's a fun hunt if you're willing to put in the effort. Like everything else, bears get hunted hard along the Magruder. If you're going to hunt from a road there's much better hunting elsewhere in the state. Get to the Salmon river, be prepared to hike straight up as far as you need to, and...
Yep. I grew up in Seeley and the blackie hunting has gotten pretty abysmal. Last year we glassed 3 Grizzlies for every black bear. When they open a griz season the upper clearwater will be a tag holder's paradise.
I'm in the Bighole year-round. At MOST, there's a half dozen grizzlies in the upper valley in the summer, but I'm willing to bet at times there isn't a single one. Elk outnumber grizzlies at least 1000:1 in the Big Hole. If you're blaming not killing an elk on grizzlies, it might be time to take...
End of May, beginning of June can be tough in NW Montana. Without snowpack the bears are able to distribute out a lot more, and the rut can cause them to move a lot too. I find it much easier to find bears in expected locations earlier in the season.
I would love to hear about all the grizzly bears you encountered in the Pioneers...
JFC, one bear walks in front of a trail camera and all the sudden the griz have decimated the elk herds
