I have had times when I just had to get someplace and with the wind at my back there was just no avoiding it- I just hauled ass until I got there. Its def not a perfect world in the elk woods.
Someone (A. S.) who designs packs for Kifaru mentioned you will feel any load at around (was it 70lbs?) and up no matter what system you run its is not reasonable to expect a pack design to erase weight it can only manage it better so it feels less. I think the fit, as already mentioned, is a...
Icon Pro 1850. I love this pack. Simple but with a nice balance of pocket design, size and function. IMO one of the best designed packs out there. Run it without its rigid frame, just the suspension, if you don't need it to haul.
I would not wait for the wind to be calm in the mountains. Just back out and find a way or a time that better favors a shot. Go back in and if its not right, back out again, rinse and repeat. At some point a time will be there when it will work. Yes keep hunting. Just don't give them your scent...
Nobody is judging anybody on how they choose to hunt on this thread. He asked for our thoughts on hunting under those conditions. But maybe learning isn't what we are here to do., maybe Its hand holding.
To answer the question about what do yo do you can't hunt from camp etc: When you back...
Any ideas?
Sure. Be more patient and don't run the elk off the mountain.
Its very hard to pull out when they are right there and you wonder if they will be there tomorrow. But it is the answer to your question given your description of the winds. Either find a time/way to make it happen or...
Def insulated and what you really want is one that has an insulated sole. Going the sock route is fine but it tends to fall on its face once it gets colder and you are not always on the go. Late rifle usually involves a fair amount of glassing and/or watching as the elk are beginning migratory...
I have always treated my dogs the same way- I also have made the bed itself the dogs area but its not as safe if there is an accident. Also bring them into the room with me. I was taught your dog is also your family and if you are a good trainer (no shade meant toward those that do it...
I went the super simple route and when I pack my bag the 1st thing is my extra shirt on top the bladder and I don't go crazy cinching down the load- I mean how tight does it have to get unless you are trying to compress a load that will not fit and then maybe the bladder needs to get moved...
X2. Take it for what its worth but IMO unless you are into rifle calibers that take out the bears structure what you shoot well is better than what you do not. If you are a 100% assassin under duress using a 10mm, or thumper handgun caliber go for it. Just be great with what you choose to...
If snow might be an issue I choose a spot that will leave me reasonable vehicle egress in and out up to 2 foot. Sometimes that means hunting an area that has a plowed road nearby but thats the way it has to be.
Not worried about being on foot I can gauge my need/time to return on snowfall rate...
I tried 3 pair (or was it 4?) Perfect hunters and they all leaked. I came to hate those boots. My first meindl were outstanding over an 8 year period so I kept hoping it was bad luck. I could stand in a stream with those boots and have dry feet. I don't know if the quality was less on these...
I hunted the Maine big woods for years. But plan on that 265lb (dressed) deer.
If I was going back I would run a Kuiu 1850. Its is a very well thought out pack, very skinny. If too small you can go up a size with little penalty in perceived bulk. I love mine its all I need for day hunting elk...
My thoughts exactly. I am still running the mainframe but will be moving on soon. I can't bash the brand for a well made pack or some of its feature, but overall I usually am finding other systems and pack designs that offer features that are better thought through. I feel when Eberlestock...
I run a cover- rarely need it but when I do its the difference between a dry pack and a soggy wet pack and soggy contents. The brand I use was under 30 bucks and works great. Sea to Summit. Weight is minor. You can go sit material for more $ or less for the cheaper nylon. I went cheaper and no...
X2. Many head designs that have a good chance of failure are pretty obvious to anyone who has a basic understanding of how things work. Long thin blades, moving parts, multiple pieces. These all add to chances of failure especially on shots that will magnify these design flaws- bone, angle...
