    Montana Outfitter Recommendations

    1. It was started by a guy named Mike Marsh who guided me for years at another outfitter. He doesn't guide anymore but is involved managing the ranch/business. Highly recommend him. He is a stand up guy. Grew up in the area and busts his butt.

Outfitter recommendations New Mexico 16 D early archery

Anyone but David Mathews. Had a bad experience with him 2 years ago in 16D. Very uninvolved bordering on lazy. He ranks at the bottom of my outfitter experiences. My guide was struggling and he didn't help and spent all his time helping his nephew guide the other client in camp who had...

    New Mexico area 16

5000-6000 yes. altitude is not the issue. The Hills in 16D are fairly steep not rolling. It is rare you will catch a big bull out on any flats. They hang in the deep nasty shit toward the end of the rut. Especially second rifle. You will see plenty of 290-300 class bulls on the flats but...

    New Mexico area 16

Be prepared to hike a lot. Very Hilly terrain where the big bulls hang out. I did 12 miles/day. Not a huge density of Elk but when you find them there will likely be a large Bull. They were bugling for me 2 years ago in 16D first rifle. If it wasn't for the hunting there is no reason I...

NM - the good, the bad and the ugly

It is great that everyone has the same odds every year. It took me 13 yrs to draw my first NR Gila tag for Rifle. Then I drew twice in the next 5 yrs in 16D. Go figure.

    280-300” Bulls

and they would talk about what a tough hunt it was as they got out of the side by side and walked 300 yds to make a really tough 200 yds shot.......while trying to hide the high fence on camera.

    Wilderness horseback preparation

I agree with everything you have said. I have elk hunted for 25 years in all different conditions. My rifle has always been stainless steel barrel and synthetic stock. No pretty guns. I use the 3 X 18 50 mm because of light gathering in the critical Big Bull moments early and late. I shoot...

    Wilderness horseback preparation

I bought this scabbard years ago from Outfitters supply in Columbia, MT. Trail Max. It fits my Remington 300RUM model 700 with a muzzle break and 50 mm Leupold 3 x 18 scope no problem. Never have to worry about my rifle as it is sturdy and easy to get a gun out of.

    Wilderness horseback preparation

I don't use a headlamp because my guides have told me that the horses see great in the dark and you don't want to mess with their night vision. In addition coming back at night they know exactly where to go to get back to their feed. It was really easy just letting them go.

    Wilderness horseback preparation

I was on a wilderness hunt in Colorado and my horse liked the "rub the clients leg on the trail trees game". I asked the guide if I should kick him or pull hard on the reins.....he smiles and said..."it is easier just to push off the trees when you come to them...as he smiled at me". I also...

    Ammo Issues

Nosler sent an email to me stating they are having problems with the unreliable supply of brass. They were supposed to produce a large batch of 300 WM and 300RUM in March but haven't received the brass. No ETA given. I told them they are going to turn me into a bow hunter......

    outfitter recommendations

Cabin or Lodge does not necessarily mean private land. I have hunted Montana out of Lodges for 20 + years all on public land. The outfitters lease or own Lodges that can sleep 6 - 8 people and have a cook. You drive out to your hunting area every morning. Unfortunately he retired and sold...

    New Elk Gun

I agree with your point which is why I am not a big fan of the 6.5. Too many people buy it and use it wrong. I have harvested many Elk over 400 yds but always my goal is to get within 300 yds. I practice shooting in the off season and am very confident at long range but still like a shot...

    New Elk Gun

I get the recoil reasons for liking a 6.5 but then you have to live with the reality that ethically you should not shoot a Bull Elk at 500-600 yds with that gun. It doesn't have the recommended energy at that distance to kill a Bull.

First Montana Elk/ mule deer hunt

The antelope are all over the lower open valleys during the day. the Elk spend the day in the timber and come down at night for the grass and Hay returning to the timber at first light. You hunt the Elk until 9:30 ish and after 3 pm. Antelope in between. They are not in the exact same area...
