for the most part the key to a good guided experience is pre booking research. I have used Outfitters for 27 yrs and have only had 2 bad experiences both caused by me not vetting references as much as I should. Even then it is possible you catch a bad guide or really tough hunting...
Hunted a private ranch in Idaho. Asked guide what time we would leave in morning. He said after sun up.
I asked him how far we would hike. He said 300 yds if I screw up. The Elk were used to the ranch trucks and only slightly moved as you came around the corner. Interesting experience I...
They are tough bastards and very different. I have found that Nosler partitions put them down faster than
Barnes X but both die. Depends a lot on distance. I have found the Barnes X punch a whole right through where the Noslers typically do a lot of internal damage wound channel and stay in...
shot 2 different Bulls in Montana one the 2nd day of opening week rifle. The other 4th day.
Both had bullet holes through the antlers from earlier close calls.
Hunted there 3 yrs ago. Decent road access but you won't see any Big Bulls from the road.
Very thick steep terrain. Maybe extra water/rain will make have the Bulls more out in the open.
I found it a beautiful unit but very hard to hunt.
If you are in a limited entry area where someone has waited years to draw a tag it is inconsiderate to be out
there messing with Elk they might be hunting.
If you are out in an OTC general area and just want to practice where no hunters are around it is just good fun.
I don't see it as...
Sounds like a better day than sitting in my office reading this thread....good for you. No day better than
spending a day out in Elk country chasin Elk.
300 RUM user for 12 years. Great Elk rifle in the big west where you might have 400 yd shots. Overkill for timber. Mine is a stock Remington
Model 700. All standard but has been glass bedded. It shoots sub inch groups with Standard Federal Premium
180 TSX Barnes and 180 Grain Nosler...
180 grain is a great weight bullet for that gun. I have shot Nosler partition and Barnes TSX out of mine.
Both group great. The TSX flies slightly better at longer ranges. The NP in my opinion hits the Elk slightly
harder.
High Desert Hunting Company out of Aguilar , CO. They have a house you stay in. One on one. Private land.
They have many different leases. www.cotrophydeer.com. They guide Elk, Deer, Antelope, Mtn Lion. Guides are all young hard working guys. Right in your price range and I have been...
two words....extra socks. Nothing ruins a hunt faster than wet feet. You need to always have dry feet/socks.
I have even packed an extra pair in my day pack in case I stepped in a creek or river.
"I don't shoot a large caliber rifle because it damages too much meat..." The difference between a 0.30 hole vs 0.270 vs 7mm really makes a difference on meat damage? Perhaps if you shoot them in the butt or shoulder vs. the lungs/heart.....
Don't get me wrong. Tagging out opening morning isn't bad at all. It is just that if it happened every time I would miss spending more time "playing with" the Elk. They are really fun to hunt since they don't play fair......
