Justin Jarrett Wapit Ridge Outfitters is a good choice.
He is a stand up guy and runs a good camp with good guides and horses.
Had a very enjoyable wilderness hunt with him
When hunting Elk, I think it is always a good idea to have a gun that you can shoot out to 400 -500 just in case
they need whacking at that range......
Drew a late tag years ago. I had a good unit but the bulls were very scattered and in isolated places.
Shot a 6 x 6 but it was a difficult hunt and we searched a lot. The bigger Bulls had retreated deep after the rut.
Not a bad hunt but nothing like the early rifle hunts in AZ
Elk hunting while still a great adventure has become very expensive. Non Resident tags have increased in price in almost every state. Outifitters used to charge $3K now charge $8K. Gas prices/Food prices/Guide costs all account for this. Landowner tags have skyrocketed due to companies...
Unfortunately $6K will not get you any good private land outfitted hunts. $6K should get you a decent Montana or Colorado outfitted hunts. That doesn't cover the Elk tag which ranges from $700-$1200 depending on State and the Tip to the outfitter. I also don't think that gives you a great...
Be prepared to pay $15K on low end and $20K + on higher end. Depending on areas the Landowner tag alone will run $7.5K - 15K.
Hunt/guiding on private ranch another $8K. You can maybe get that down a few K if you stay off property and feed yourself.
You might want to check with a hunting...
a key point mentioned is Elk are the toughest animal you will shoot at. Any marginal hit will result in a long day of tracking and most likely a lost animal. You owe it to the Elk to take the most ethical shot you can get. The philosophy of "if it ain't flyin it ain't dyin" isn't a good...
Justin Jarret is an outfitter out of Ten Sleep / Buffalo. (Wapiti Ridge Outfitters) I don't know if he will just pack but he runs a very good Wilderness camp. I had a great hunt with him.
shot a few wild pigs, a few blacktail deer. Saw some elk hunting pictures in the snow. Swore I would never do that until I got drunk at a RMEF dinner and bought an elk hunt. That was 31 yrs ago and I go every year now.
Sometimes when I am hiking in snow freezing my balls off I wonder about...
No. I enjoyed my WY hunt but will take the hint on NR prices and hunt elsewhere.
Not interested in playing that game anymore.
Good luck to everyone else.
once again I am not paying $ to be a shooter. I am paying $ to have them do everything I don't like to or want to do. Every year on every hunt I am an active participant in strategy and game plan. I even carry his pack up the hill, well maybe not that.
also to your point I have learned...
your perception of guided is off in my opinion. When you hire an outfitter or guide you can be passive and just follow him and shoot if that is your wish. What you are really hiring an outfitter/guide for is to make your experience better and suited to what you want. They know the area...
