What am I not thinking of? (OTC Dark timber, mountain elk)

That can definitely be a blessing and a curse all by itself. If they don’t move, they don’t leave as big a footprint of sign and they seem to be more weary in my experience. Maybe they’re too familiar with everything around them?

Finding Elk Sign in High Rugged Country

A few similarities, but no for the most part. Completely different animal. But they both need the same things, food, cover, security, water. But it’s a different ballgame for sure. Too many “eastern” guys try to employ their deer scouting/hunting tactics to the mountains and it just doesn’t...

Backpack as day pack and sleeping bag vs quilt

I switched to a quilt 2 years ago and don’t think I’ll go back to a bag unless I’m in very cold temps. I’m a bow hunter, so generally not in super cold temps. But I did have a single digit night last year, I survived. CedarRidge is the brand I use. There is definitely a learning curve to the...

Tarptent Stratospire 1 - taller persons

Can’t speak to the Stratosphere, but I’m 6’1 and use the Moment DW without issues. There have been a few setups in the dark where I wasn’t as level as I hoped but that could happen in any setup. Like stated above, call Tarptent. They are extremely helpful and can point you in the right direction.

What am I not thinking of? (OTC Dark timber, mountain elk)

If I could pinpoint the root cause of all my bone headed screw ups over the years, I’d say it was being impatient. When you know you’re on them, slow way down. Be smart, sometimes you just gotta back out and wait. That’s probably the hardest part for me. Sit there and listen to one screaming but...

Finding Elk Sign in High Rugged Country

When im looking at new areas I zoom out pretty far on GE and just look at the whole area. I prefer the dark stuff. So I let my eyes gravitate to the darker bigger blocks, and then start breaking them down. I like several East-West running ridges in close proximity so I can get on top and cover...

    Trekking poles - cork handles

I’ve used Black Diamond alpine for a few years. Zero complaints. Saved my butt once or twice.

    Thoughts on switching RH-LH

Thanks for all the advice. I’ve got a buddy that is left handed. We shoot similar draw length. Gonna shoot his for a while and see before I dump over a grand on a bow.

    Thoughts on switching RH-LH

That’s what I’m running into. Extremely hard to draw naturally and almost impossible sitting down. That’s why I’m leaning towards switching to lefty. I can pull with the shoulder just can’t extend and hold anything. 6 months of therapy, they basically said I was as good as they could get me...

    Thoughts on switching RH-LH

It’s the combination. I dropped draw weight on my bow to start building my shoulder strength back, but I’ve still got some serious problems with it. Been 13 months since the first surgery. Just traded one problem for another. Very frustrating.

Looking for Buddies to Chase Elk with this Fall in CO

Several years ago I moved 8 hrs from my home. Started going to the local archery shop and hanging out. Met some guys who were like minded. Also went to local 3D shoots. Put yourself out there. But I’ve always been leery of who I went in the mountains with. Can be good, but there are some horror...

    New cooking stove advice.

Yeah I've been thinking of trying the non attachable pot route. Looked at the Soto, PocketRocket2, and have even talked to a few guys who have had some good luck out of the Amazon knock off brands. When you read "doesn't do well in wind", What exactly are we saying? Doesn't do well above tree...

    Thoughts on switching RH-LH

Well I’m right eye dominate but I figured it would just be a process of training myself to learn to shoot with one eye closed? Not sure how’d that would work if I still used both.

    Thoughts on switching RH-LH

Yeah I tried dropping some and still struggled to hold my bow arm for long. Surgeries were on my left shoulder. So holding the arm up and drawing is the issue. Strengthening hasn’t improved either.

    Thoughts on switching RH-LH

Had 2 rotator surgeries last year and now I’ve torn it again. I’ve always shot RH and pulled 70#s. I will not have another surgery (shit sucks 💯) thinking of buying a new bow and teaching myself to shoot LH. Anyone here ever switched? I’m guessing it will take some serious time. 30 yrs of...

    New cooking stove advice.

Used a jetboil for years. It finally took a crap on me. Thinking of trying something new. Tell me what you use and why I should try it. Gonna buy several and test them out this summer. I only use it for drinks and rehydration of foods.

    Burned area

The edges may have some good feed where the fire wasn’t as hot. Seen places that burned 10+ years ago that are still like a desert. But man does that stuff suck to hunt in. Nothing like crawling though a maze of logs all day. Your shins will hate you for it.

Colorado GMUs 80/81 are now draw for archery

I’m from AR myself and have bow hunted CO elk for over 20 years. Always stayed clear of the Okie-Tex units. Heard it was a circus down there. I personally hate to see any opportunities disappear, but it’s understandable. I just wish there was a realistic answer to the point creep. I’ve been...
