Strange that no one has contacted Deadhorse Search & Rescue to get info, about the Caribou hunter who vanished in roughly the same location, last year and was never found.
I have over the last 53 years harvested "and" processed 21 or 22 Alaska Mountain Goats. I have a fairly good comprehensive grasp of what an Alaskan Mountain Goat looks like. We back in the early 70's could harvest (2) "TWO" Alaskan Mountain Goats per season.
As to any knowledge of what an...
Lots of Mt Goats on Kenai Peninsula. Most days (not all) I can watch 16 to 20 from the cabin, on the hills from the back windows (West); and front windows (Southeast).
The last 15-20 years there have been more Mt Goats then Moose. The Mt Goats get hit and killed on the road as they cross to...
Learn to put in for Draw Hunts. They are much cheaper; several you could rent a vehicle and a short walk to the Caribou and Black Bear. Or take a super short flight to a lake in that area.
Both years 71' and 72' my hunting partner and I Chartered a flight out of Bettles. AK. to the upper Noatak River, near where the Ambler River flows in. We would drive his truck to Fairbanks on the "unfinished" Parks Hwy. (fuel was cheap) Catch a commercial flight Fairbanks to Bettles, sleep free...
Off typic:
When I started you could buy a good used PA-18-150 for $9,500.00 to $11,500.00 (Roughly what guys are now paying for a basic hunt).
Fifty years ago, we sold two on one hunts (that is two hunters on same hunt one guide for $700.00) and we picked them up at the Anchorage airport and...
Sorry, but best I can do is tell you it was "nearly" the exact same thing. His group had hunted one side of the road, hard for several days and had seen nothing.
They were sitting around camp, and he gathered up his stuff, and stated he was going to look around on the "other side" of the road...
Screw camp, to stay alive all he needed to know is the direction to the road. He knew what mile marker camp was near. As soon as the fog rolled in, should have aborted and returned to camp, get the pack the next day.
It is known that fog rolled in shortly after he departed camp to retrieve the pack.
Given how diligently they searched, my wild guess as to a possibility, is his pack may have attracted a Grizzly Bear, or he may have simply encountered a bear in the fog. If a bear got him, it would likely cover...
I am a commercial Pilot, spent many-many decades (roughly four) flying and working as a Registered Guide for many operations (Never Transporter Operations) You summed it up good.
What bewilders me is that they now charge more for a do it yourself, drop-off Caribou hunt then we charged for a...
