Yep, what he said. Moose roll over pretty easy compared to elk, my experience with sheep is one for me and six for dad. They go down pretty easy also. Bears I like bonded bullets. Swift Aframe; Accubond and the like. Partitions always have worked for us as well.
Focus on the sheep, have a great...
Ive just completed deer season 53. Most of those have been done with an 06 and 150 grain bullets. Mostly Noslers, first partitions and then Ballistic Tips. 52.5 grains 4064. Not too many white tails. Mostly mule deer and Blacktail.
.338 Jarrett for elk, moose and bears. .375HH for bears
..30/06 for deers and elk. Hell until about 5 years ago the 06 was my light rifle. But I’ve seen the light.
Three, all from around 1960, Ft. Wainwright. I was 6 or 7 getting into all kind of mischief. Was farting around with Capt. Pye’s kid, Bob as I recall. Down by the Chena river. Forbidden ground. Chanced upon a bull moose just below a cut bank. We decided it was a good idea to throw rocks at him...
If you are around Starker ground you are in good country. Thompson Timber as well. I logged for both outfits a long time ago while I was at OSU. Lived on venison, steelhead and skim milk.
Core light wt Hoodie, new this year also a heavy weight. 1/4 zip tees need to be replaced I wear them about 200 days a year, Worn out one jet stream jacket, but that took fIve years of guiding. Got a new one this fall. Merino wool light wt. Long Johns and their packable raingear.
Shit, I’m not sure what difference it makes at pistol fighting distance. I’ve been as close as five feet a couple of times, the bear trying real hard to get away from us. Sprayed a bunch with pepper spray, never worried much about the wind, didn’t stand around waiting for it to blow back. I’ve...
Like the others, my XDM 10mm have been flawless. I think we are running buffalo bore 220 but could be Underwood. In any event I don’t let my guides shoot up too much of that but it’s been flawless. The standard 180 grain practice ammo has also been flawless. I left both guns in Alaska so I can’t...
The math part is strait forward, the variables are tougher to pin down. In addition to the comments above I would add in the time factor. Do you have a dedicated space to stay set up, kids, wife, girlfriend, dogs.
One rifle or will you accumulate 32 sets of dies?
for one 308 it probably will...
The .30/06 has accounted for quite a few of my elk, works fine. .270Bee is a fine choice. About 25 elk ago I needed an excuse to buy a .338, sell the Bee and buy one too!
Congratulation, nothing like it. For most of my clients it wasn’t the fish they talked about it was their first encounter with a grizz that occupied their stories. Nothing like spending the day with apex predators close at hand. I hope you get the chance to see many more
