Been ruminating your question.
Your area is primarily sockeye spawning, some chum and kings with silvers coming later. The bio mass is probably 90% sockeye. Peak of the spawn on those streams is late August, by mid September the Salmon are really starting to thin out.
Weather sucks on either...
The biggest bucks seem to come from Northern California. SW Oregon also produces some dandies. Scott Haugen wrote a number of articles on black tail hunting and at least one book. I would recommend that reading. He would also be a great resource for guides. PM me I’ll give you his number.
Kate and Justin’s location offers the best of both worlds. The lodge was built before there was a road, I got tired of bad weather problems so I built a road about 14 years ago.
For Kate that means you can always fish the river if you cant fly a particular day, or fish till the fog clears at...
Run timing can very dramatically based on location. Listen closely to the outfitters when you talk to them. Always get them to define the peak of the run for the species you want. Kate and Justin fish kings on both the Naknek and the Nush. The rivers aren’t 30 miles apart but the Nush run is...
I spent 20 years guiding in Bristol Bay, last year was my final season. Sold the place to Kate and Justin. As noted they are great anglers and fun to fish with. For years we worked together, if we needed extra guides we called them if they needed help they called us.
I think it was Kate’s first...
I’m down to my final two GSPs. I’m 66 they are both 10. You got some great tips and the only thing I would add is a minimum of 3.5 miles a day. I guided with my dogs until last year. Both are too injured to keep working, if we don’t get them into a run every other day they drive us nuts. They...
Have fun, learn to work on them, not that Yamaha needs much. Even with modern electronics they are relatively simple. With 15 boats I’ve seen quite a few problems. Bent prop shafts and the motor for the tilt probably top the list of my frustrations. Oh, and fuel, change your filters often. Great...
I think you’re good. We have five G3’s for our guests to use up in AK. They can go self guided if they chose. The boats handle well and are practically indestructible. Have had a grizz or two get into them and tear up the seats and the floor once, but you probably don’t need to worry about that...
Well done. I was taught “ there is nothing more honorable you will do with your life than THE JOB done well”
From what I’ve read you have achieved that goal.
Welcome to the club, hang on you’re in for a great ride. I hung up my shield ten years ago and have never been so busy.
Well it didn’t show in the picture, bull on the right has a fork on the right spike, saw it through my scope. Spike only unit requires at least one antler is a spike only. He finally stopped in the open at 501 yards right at sunset. Swarovski 10x42 said he was good to go 338 Jarrett did the...
Just stepped up to Swarovski in the last two years, 66; readers but 20/15 and can still resolve Iron sights. I’m lucky. Might only have 20 good hunting years left but worth it.
I’m 66, still leaving guys behind when I hunt and just retired from my third career, guiding. Spent an awful lot of time in the woods. I’ve owned an awful lot of spotting scopes and binoculars. I nickel and dimed my way to better and better glass. Over the last two years I stepped up to...
Disturbing to read of these failures. We’ve been using in reach for several years, all of our guides carry one. 6) Each of the planes have one as well(5). During the off season most of us carry the in reach on our personal adventures, ive been in Baja for a month. None of these units have failed...
