Thanks for sharing, makes sense. I also adjust my turrets for compensation over 200-250 so flat isn’t much of a concern. I save my old 7mm rem mag with a fixed scope for that. I’ll stick with the 180’s I got than. What are you looking to sell those 150’s for though. Might be nice to have a solid...
Sounds like you have quite a bit of expierence with them. Maybe I’m simply overthinking it. If I could get the 150’s would you expect them to have different terminal effects with behind the shoulder shots due to the higher velocity? Or same effect because of the simple hardness of copper? Newer...
Hi Guys,
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or information. I’ve got a bunch of 180g Barnes TTSX I’d like to start pressing up. I was hoping to go with 150g for higher velocities as I’ve found performance with Mono bullets is great under higher velocities…but slim pickings. That said I’d like...
Yeah I dont know what to say….your velocity is right up where it should be and the yardage of shot should also be perfect. Only thing I can reference would be what I’ve been told and that would be at closer range shots aim for the shoulder. But again than you lose meat….you got my stumped.
Hi Smtn,
Thanks for sharing. So whenever I’m seen a bullet banana like that it’s typically an issue of velocity. How far were those shots, and what’s your starting velocity. Just curious
Locate bugle/chuckles, close the distance fast to 100-200yds, once your close start stomping and raking with a big ole stick…They can’t resist the party.
It’s important to know I also will not take shots over 400yds. Can I….sure pretty efficient to 600yds. But typically I hunt thick nasty timber. I’ve never had an instance where I couldn’t close the distance, even on Mulies. Average shorts are 50-150yds.
I’m starting to think based on reply’s...
Been shooting Barnes 180g for a while and love them. That said, recently started reloading and have been playing with the idea of switching to the 150g for a Mule Deer/Elk cartridge instead of having two separate loads. Have heard they perform better at higher velocities so thinkin about give...
All those shafts are a great choice. I typically like a stiff arrow with high FOC for elk. I would go with the Victory Rip TKO in 250 spine. That said my preference is to try to be between 275-280fps while having an arrow around or above 500g. I’d throw a 100g Iron will on that arrow and hit the...
I loved my Howa 1500 in 308. Very mild kick, tons of ammo available, and shot 1/2”-3/4” groups at 100 all day long with Barnes TTSX. Also nice cause the actions are the same as the weatherbys so you get the quality at a much lesser price. I do believe a different bolt though. Either way it was...
Hey Jeremy,
Was able to get the rifle separated this morning. Unfortunately no sign of any stamp or identification anywhere, apparently whoever made it does not want the praise deserved. Appreciate your willingness to dive into this with me, and provide so much context on the rifle. Either way...
Thanks rockchuck! I’ve always been a it’s a tool it’s meant to be used guy. I find myself struggling with this one. Gonna mount a real basic leupold 4x12x50 on it and use it for those sunny day mule deer/antelope hunts where I won’t have to drag it through the thick timber. Save the 300 mesa for...
So it’s bedded in their extremely snug. It will take a little more time for me to take it out without prying to much. That said I believe it’s a Winslow based on what I’ve found. Here is a Winslow with the same exact stock.
Hi Jeremy,
Wow, what a wealth of knowledge. I appreciate you taking the time to break everything down and explain. The caliber markings are in script as you mentioned, so that’s awesome to know the barrel is original. I’ll separate it now as I’m extremely eager to know all the details. I’ll...
Hey guys,
My mentor Bill just passed away unfortunately, he was a gun nut and avid hunter. Two months later a man showed up at my door with this rifle he used on many of our hunts. I was tickled to hear he had willed it to me. I’d like to find out more about it other than he used it on many of...
Never pass on a response bugle….no matter how steep, deep, rugged, or far. Always assume it’s an elk rather than another hunter and simply moving on. Year after year I watch expierenced guys strike out cause they just couldn’t fathom an elk sounding a certain way and doubting what they are...
Really good question. Beds, game trails, rubs, can be prevalent for years as these animals are huge and establish areas over decades at times. That said, typically green poop if smearable for better terms is usually pretty fresh and by fresh I mean minutes - days depending on weather. If your...
Hey Axe,
Thanks for reaching out. How much you have and how much you want for it? I just ordered a box of the ELD-X 200g you mentioned. Excited to get it dialed for late season elk.
Thanks for the offer! I’d absolutely take it but I was able to find a local guy to me that had a bunch as he doesn’t reload. Really appreciate your response though!
