Seems like there are two main types of hunters now; those driving the SxS and those trying to get as deep or as rugged a location as possible. I try to split the difference now.
This is all dependent on area of the country too. WY, ID, MT all seem to have more residents taking toughness to the...
Agree with everyone that it depends. One aspect to consider though, is I've seen lots of tracks in fresh burns. I don't think the deer hang in the burns but they must get some nutrient from the fresh ash. Don't overlook a burn from that year. Best burns are the ones that jump ridges and leave...
A floorless tent will work but when in gets windy your tent is going to get very dusty. You could try and stack rocks around the base of the tent to cut down on the draft. Snakes won't be a worry in February but if you're running a stove you might get a scorpion or other visitor trying to soak...
Bring a bigger tent, a cot, and get decent sleep. No advantage from backpacking any of the NM Barbary units. If you have access to a SxS or an eBike would be helpful to bring. Also, depending on your location, that fire starter kit could be useless with the lack of things to burn. Also, bring a...

I move a lot in my sleep and don't have an issue with drafts as others complain about.
Carrot - How long did it take to get your custom XXL? I'm a big guy too and you've given me hope I can find a quilt that fits. What rating did you get and Are you happy with it?
I'm a TN native NM resident. Did you draw the January archery or rifle tag this year? I drew the Jan rifle tag. I plan on scouting a couple times this summer. Once I get enough posts to PM let's chat.
Great thread!
Anyone have any issues with how loud the Xtherm pad material is? I'm an active sleeper and it seems all the cracking/crinkling noise would be a nuisance.
This is an awesome hunt. Two strategies 1) glass down low then hike/climb up while trying to not get spotted. 2) hike/climb to get as high as possible and then glass.
1) doesn't have as many wasted climbs but hard to sneak up on them from below
2) climbs can be a waste if they're not in the...
