Didn't put in a vote. But as a guy going on my first backpacking trip (solo) next week, and working towards accumulating all the right gear over the next several years. This thread has been valuable.
I know my pack will be way too heavy this year. I'm okay with that. I'll learn what I...
I'd agree 100% with this. As a new non-resident hunter, OnX absolutely allows me to be confident and comfortable heading in to an alpine hunting area I've never been to.
I grew up on paper maps, and wouldn't have much issue using them to navigate and still enjoy using paper maps on long road...
Should be arriving at basecamp in exactly 2 weeks. I'm ready. I could honestly be ready to head out of the door with just 2-3 hours notice.
Bow is shooting nicely, gear is packed, food is sorted and ready to pack.
Can't wait!!
So for those amateur's that will be going on a:
DIY SOLO non-OTC BP ARCH elk hunt.
Planning to film/document/vlog the adventure on his/her/their iPhone. How would they go about "balancing their audio"?
(Speaking for a friend of course)
If we register, any chance we'll be able to get a recorded version of it?
My son's first Varsity football game of the season is Friday night, so will be unavailable during the Live, but very much interested in the content.
Planning to do the same thing next month. Coming in from an ATV trail on top of the mountain then working along the timberline and lower in multiple drainages.
⬆️ Agreed tons of great advice from Yak's Friday AM 2 cents! lol
And all the other legit feedback from Rokslide.
Reason I'm not using the Meat Hauler as my primary pack setup. It was handed down to me 6-8 years ago, it's probably 20 years old itself. The suspension system is rough. Straps...
Well I feel like I could have pulled it off okay. But also it’d be a pain have so much constantly strapped to the outside. Why haul in additional opportunities for problems?
I went to Cabelas and got a bigger in frame pack. On sale; so that helps. Big enough to get everything inside and has...
That make solid sense. Once it’s daylight and I’m in a ways I’ll have my bow off my pack and in my hands, so that’d free up the middle to strap the sleep system too.
I’m 6’5”, did a test run around the yard, it’s more mid-upper buttocks than hammy’s.
I could definitely see it being an issue if I get in heavy deadfall areas.
It’s expandable between the storage area and the inner frame for meat hauling. After first trip out with camp and first load of meat; I’ll have an old meat hauler frame I’ll take in for heavier meat loads on subsequent trips.
First backpack hunt. So working with a number of budget items. Mostly worried about limited pack space.
Using an Alps Traverse pack. 3-5 day Spike camp.
Currently I have my 20 degree mommy bag, Trekker 2V tent, and inflatable sleeping bag all in the One Tigris waterproof compression sack...
I'm probably pushing 60+ hours eScouting via OnX, Google Earth, and Google Maps/Terrain in the last month. 90% of that is while at work....
Also the hours on Rokslide forums are also adding up, also while at work...
I'll be in the same situation next month. Coming up from 1100'. We'll drive overnight, get there midday. I plan to scout and stay at the cabin at 9400' the first night, then ATV up the rest of the way to where I'll be hunting and spike camping between 11-12k' before sunup the next day.
1) Experience. Been coaching Little League football for the last decade which means there is never more than 2 days in a row off Aug-Oct. So simply couldn't make Elk hunting happen.
2) Time. Only have 8 total days, and 2 of those will be lost to driving.
First year getting to Archery hunt...
