    Unfamiliar Territory

Yes, I have an ATV. Use it in CO. Prefer not to drag it up to Montana. But definitely could provide access to areas, I otherwise wouldn’t get to.

    Unfamiliar Territory

I've spent my first few years western hunting Elk in a specific unit in CO. I chose that unit initially because a friend had a cabin there and familiarity with the unit and gave me somewhere to start. It's also only about a 9 hour drive from home. 2022 - OTC 2nd Rifle. 2023- 0PP Draw -...

    Your Elk Hunting Rifle

20" Barrel on the Standard. 22" on the Predator. Both come in 7PRC. I'm on waiting list for both, gonna take the first one that becomes available. I like the Predator colorway, but wouldn't mind the shorter Barrel of the standard. Both are threaded with factory Brake installed.

    Your Elk Hunting Rifle

Just ordered a Ruger American Gen II in 7PRC. Been waiting a few months for the caliber to get released. Have a Ruger American Predator Gen I in 6.5CM that I absolutely love as my Deer Gun.

    Oklahoma Preference (Bonus) Points

Drew out in 2016 for a Jan 2017 Bull Hunt. Had 6 Preference Points at the time. Had two guys in my truck with 25+ points. One was a guy in his 80s that finally drew at 33 pts. They took us out the day before and we all got a numbered flag, during the scouting trip we got to identify our own...

Leaving Trail Cameras over the Summer

Not a bad idea. I use broken sticks all the time at home in the whitetail woods to adjust the angle. I'm 6'5", so can probably can get them up around 7' with no issues, the rubber door stops might come in pretty handy.

    Dropping pack to stalk...

How many guys carry a daypack that can’t pack meat? Let’s say you opt for the minimal necessities in pack to minimize weight and maximize maneuverability. Is it a standard daypack, or something with a frame or a larger pack that can expand for meat transport?

Leaving Trail Cameras over the Summer

@Next Ridge thanks for the Snotel reference. Led me to NWCC basin charts which show that particular area is below average in snow fall this year and on track for clearing up in May. Gives a little hope, as long as downfall isn’t considerate.

Leaving Trail Cameras over the Summer

Thanks for the input everyone. Memorial weekend is my only window. Between my daughter’s travel softball, my oldest son’s work schedule, and me being on an island with my wife for 10 days mid-July for our 20th. We’re making the trip happen that weekend! Lol Camping spot I’m aiming for is at...

Leaving Trail Cameras over the Summer

I am taking my 2 boys up Memorial weekend to the unit I plan to hunt for a 3 day camping/scouting trip. I am entertaining the idea of putting out 2-3 Trail Cameras in a specific drainage with the plan to collect them in September. (0PP Archery Draw) I live in OK, but hunt in CO. This will...

Which do you think is hunted harder OTC archery or Rifle in CO

First CO elk hunt was an OTC 2nd Rifle hunt in '22. It was amazing how many hunters were in the field. We made a 2 hour drive on a SxS from a buddy's cabin to a hunting area one morning, and passed no less than 20 hunters in the last 30 minutes of the drive. Many were setup, visible from the...

    Tent for Truck Camping?

Just recently purchased the Cabela's Lodge tent for this same purpose. Truck camping off a dead end road up a Mountain this fall. Got the 12' x 12', says its an 8 person, HAHAHA Yeah Right! Planning to put 3 in it on cots this June on a 3 night scouting trip with my two boys. But come Fall...

    Creepy experiences in the backcountry

After spending a week in South Central CO, I do have an add to this wonderful thread. A little creepy, but very odd.... Day 2, around 12,000 feet. Worked a Bull with a timid Bugle around 7am to no avail. Only confirmed Bull I hear bugle in 7 days. But that's a different discussion. It's...

    Backcountry hunt pack weight

Just weighed my pack fully loaded. Loaded for 3 nights then back to basecamp for a reset. 36 LBs. No food, water, or bow. Not bad for the initial first crack at backpacking.

Conflicted on my archery setup for stalking elk

Sounds like you’ve done the work. Pick what you are most confident and accurate with. Confidence is more important that a few FPS. All of your setups will work great with accurate shot placement.

A Request for All the Elk Hunting YouTubers...

For newer hunters, the low key DIY You-tubers provide a huge resource and help shorten the learning curve. Watched every "random guy" DIY hunt video I could find. Learned a ton about the 90% of the stuff you deal with during your hunt outside of just what happens in the Redzone. But it's the...

How do you carry trekking poles ?

I have them slid vertically between the main bag and the frame for storage until needed. Also have an allen shooting stick converted to a bino pod that is stashed similarly on the other side.

    Creepy experiences in the backcountry

I'm on page 58 so far. This thread is amazing. Sat down to watch the first episode of the 411 series with the wife last night. What's the term my momma used: "Glutten for punishment!" Leave out 1 week from today for a Solo backpacking hunt.....LOL
