I made my living for many years as a flyfishing guide. A guide friend of mine asked me once if I had ever tried tenkara and I told him no and probably never would. For backpacking I have a Sage Dart 3wt and a Click reel that is plenty lightweight/packable. I use a florescent light tube cut down...
Any kind of fur for dubbing on lots of fly patterns. Deer or elk hair for caddis dry fly patterns, stimulators, wings for hoppers etc.. As mentioned above pheasant tail for pheasant tail nymphs. Any kind of fur or feather can be used. Rabbit hair/squirrel hair strips are good for streamers...
I spend a lot of time fishing high country lakes and streams during the summer and guided for 30 years. Usually the fish aren't too picky. A 9' 5wt multi-piece rod with a good WF floating line and a 7 1/2' 5x leader with a spool of 5x tippett will get you started. For flies I would have a few...
As others have said, most of the high lakes will still be iced over in May/June. Here's a pic of one of my favorite lakes in early July. Call the local fly shop of where you'll be and they'll give you the best options for that area.
An AUM for sheep is 5 sheep, $1.35 for 5 sheep. What a joke that is. Anyone who's been above timberline and come across 1000 head of sheep know how much damage they do. When they leave an area it's bare dirt with lots of erosion and polluted headwater creeks. I can't believe we're still letting...
As said above just contact the govt. agency who manages the land. They should have a schedule of where the domestics are or should be at any particular time. I hate them on public lands in the high country.
The fact that they transmit disease (pneumonia) to bighorn sheep and have literally...
Left Hand 56" Black Widow PCHX 3 piece Takedown Recurve 60# at 28". Selling this because I'm having shoulder problems and need to go lighter. Bow is in great shape, has a few small surface scratches from being hunted with but in no way affects integrity of it. Always stored unstrung, hanging...
A lot of great success photos, congrats to all, especially the kids.
I spent several 10 plus mile days postholing and slipping around in the snow and mud looking for this guy. It's highly addictive chasing these weird birds.
I'd like to hunt New Mexico someday but I need to get a passport and a refresher on my Spanish.
Seriously though, I grew up in NM and hunted the Gila quite a few times, Unit 2 for mule deer many times, a OIL Bighorn tag and now I live across the border and haven't drawn a tag since I moved...
I tried an alcohol wipe out of my first aid kit, burned for a day and a half. Alcohol and backcountry roids don't mix. Probably sounded like a sasquatch screaming.
I currently have an ARE and haven't noticed any water leaks. I had a Leer and it leaked around the front window . With both, everything in the bed gets covered in dust. I've put weatherstrip around tailgate and still can't figure out how to seal it and keep the dust out. Any suggestions on that?
