    Barrel Length Restrictions For Hunting?

.308 is forgiving in respect to velocity and accuracy with barrel lengths down to 16 inch. Personally I would go with 18 or 20 inch barrel for a bolt gun or a semi-auto. It’s a handy and balanced length in the sweet spot.

    Fly fishing mountain lakes

I have a compact and light weight spin cast rod/reel for backpacking trips. There are similar fly rods. Personally I think it’s a great idea as an alternative activity if you harvest early or have some downtime.

    Tarp recommendations for day hunts

Looking for recommendations for a tarp for use on day hunts while glassing for sun/rain/wind protection. Specifically size, weight, shape, set-up, and color for 1-2 hunters. Most tarp discussion threads are overnight focused. Thanks.

    Sleeping Bag Temperature Rating

A 55 deg bag would be a rough night in 30 deg cold temps. Layer with a puffy hooded jacket and pants. Also bring a good insulated ground mat and a sleeping bag liner.

    Rain gear or puffy??

I would first spend my money on a good hard shell jacket and pants. More versatile for layering. It also acts as a wind blocker. There are plenty of hard shells that are made out of quiet material. The puffy jacket and pants are great for static activity like glassing and sitting in a stand...

    The future of Lead

Living in CA I transitioned to copper and loose no sleep over it. The non-lead bullets do absolutely just fine in terms terminal velocity, range, accuracy and energy for dispatching game animals. Taken pigs, deer and elk with them. Even hunt rabbits with lead free .22LR. The big issue is cost...

    Plastic bags for food

I break down meals into Ziplock freezer bags to save weight and space. However I prepare the meal in a large metal cup with a lid. Not a fan of plastic and hot water.

So you want to get into reloading, huh!

I was “pushed” into reloading because my state has a non-lead bullet requirement limiting ammo choice. Personally I would just start to reload the .300 WM with a simple single stage press. You will learn the process better and there is less to mess up doing only one operation at a time. I...

If you could only give one piece of advice to a new elk hunter, what would it be?

Pre-season physical fitness training is #1. Practice shooting other than from a bench rest and be proficient at longer shots. Don’t pass up a elk cow tag.

    Braggin Board for Fishing!

Dolly Varden trout on the Anchor River, Homer AK. Great day. Lost one I just landed to a bald eagle who swooped in for the steal.

    Boot spray

Kennetrek boot dressing seems to penetrate better and is more persistent waterproofing treatment than sprays in my experience. Nikwax is a very good spray however I had to do it more often.

    Leupold VX3 or VX5?

VX-5 if it fits your budget. I recently purchased a VX-5HD 1-5x25 CZS-ZDL over the VX-3HD 1.5-5x20. I would rather invest in better glass.

    Bombproof Gaiters?

I have had good luck with my Outdoor Research Expedition Gaiters in Coyote. https://www.outdoorresearch.com/us/expedition-crocodiles-usa-243115 My Kenetrek gaiters are lighter and more packable however the OR’s seem more durable IMO.
