Only reason I’m selling is I’ve since gone to a quilt and have no use for this...
I’ve talked myself into and out of a hilleberg yellow label a dozen times now. I’m probably packing my fears, but my limited experience tells me I’m looking for a proper 4-season tent (I’ll probably talk myself off that ledge at some point, too).
I’ve looked into this quite a bit, actually. I didn’t pull the trigger because it appears as if it would shred unless it was protected by a shell at all times.
The man has spoken 😤
I should have clarified that I’m hoping the deviator’s nylon shell will block *just* enough wind to cut the chill. I know it won’t be as effective as a wind jacket, and that’s ok with me. I also like that there’s no insulation on the back, a nod to a cool design feature of...
That’s what I did this whole hunt and have done on all previous hunts. This hunt was windy all the damn time! I felt that I was beating on my rain gear unnecessarily and wasn’t taking advantage of more breathable fabrics and therefore was more sweaty than I would have been otherwise.

Learned a lot and got hooked harder than I expected. Heading back out two weekends from now, and then have a late season area I can four-wheel into and need to check off before everything shuts down.
Hope you were able to make it out this year!
Correct. This drainage was hunted by my partner the previous two years and 50+ sheep, including several bands of rams, are normal for this area. Strange indeed.
I’m not overly familiar with sheep behavior, but looking back on it now, my best guess is the weather pushed them down and into areas...
Thanks, Ben!
Re: Chugach, a few questions for you. How are you treating the set pre-/post-hunt? Are you busting brush with it on and just being careful, or taking it off until you’re through? If you’re not taking it off, have you had any serious issues with tears?
Re: Tent, might pick your...
*FOLLOW UP*
Had a blast. Didn’t see a sheep, but we killed a grizzly on the way back to the truck. We thought we were closer, but ended up hiking a bear hide, skull, and claws 16 miles. Not our best idea lol.
I severely underestimated this hunt. It was the first physical challenge I’ve ever...
I, maybe incorrectly, assumed the delay was due to the herd’s proximity to the Steese. However, a buddy was just up there and said the caribou were “nowhere to be seen”.
Your comment about herd health makes me think something else is at play. Would you mind elaborating?
I don’t hunt Montana or Idaho, but applaud your first post. I hope this works out for you, but if it doesn’t, I encourage you to continue to participate in the forum - both giving and receiving advice. If you do, it’s my experience that you will make those connections.
I’ve personally hunted...
