I think it depends on the terrain, the distance glassing, and the critter you're glassing. I've owned Swarovski 10's and liked them. I sold them for the new 15 SLC HD's and LOVE them. I got to use the 12 EL's and liked them a lot, but not as much as the 15's. If it weren't for coues deer, I'd...
Verifying your BC is the best way to do it. No ballistics calculator is going to be perfect. I verify all of my drops out to my max distance. I just don't like that they lied about their BC's to stay competitive in sales with Hornady and Berger. Just a personal issue of mine I guess.
The ELDX...
It all comes down to personal preference, and what rifle you can shoot more accurately. My elk rifle weighs 15lbs unloaded. But I prefer my rifle to be heavy. I can make better shots with a heavy rifle than I can with a light rifle. So that's what I choose to use. Most hunts come down to one...
There have been multiple tests on the Accubond LR's, and their listed BC's are exaggerated. So for me they were a no go. I use to shoot bergers, but feel I have upgraded by switching to the ELDX's. They have a similar design, but the ELDX has a retaining belt midway through the bullet to retain...
We had both of our rifles dialed in at 1000 yards prior to the hunt (10" groups or better). On the second day of the hunt we put a 95"ish 8 point to bed in a shady nook at just over 500 yards. We sat on him for 3 hours, waiting for him to get up for a shot (so we had plenty of time to range, get...
Last year on a coues hunt here in AZ, my friends SHV sh!t the bed in the middle of our hunt. He missed 2 really nice bucks because of it. He ended up using my rifle to fill his tag on the last day. As for a robust scope, I'd have to say look at the Burris XTR II. The glass is not quite as clear...
Recipe for success.
Savage action
Savage PTG Bolt Head
Rifle Basix SAV-2 Trigger
X-Caliber Barrel (Cryo Treated)
Stock of your choice professionally bedded
Top it off with good base, rings, and quality scope.
At a fraction of the cost, you can have a rifle that shoots sub .5 moa. I've done...
You can always sell your rifle and watch LongRangeHuntingForums.com for a custom rifle for sale. They have dozens of new rifles posted every day. You can also get smoking deals on them, without the wait of dealing with a gunsmith. A lot of guys selling good rifles for good prices there.
Guns...
I'd scrap everything but the trigger and action. Then take it to a smith that knows Sakos to re-barrel it, do some work to the trigger, and bed a good stock to it. You might be a tad over your 1300 bucks, but you'd have a rifle better than anything you can buy new for $1300 bucks.
Thanks for the post. I'll check out the hammock forum. And your are correct. I did not list the hammock. So my total weight would be even heavier. I'll have to keep researching. Keep in mind I don't have a bunch of $$$ to spend right now, so I'm not going to be able to buy the lightest of the...
Oh, and I should mention that it will be me and my brother. So we will be able to split stuff up, and hopefully sleep under the same tarp. Just use a common tree for the feet, and use separate trees for the head. We will be around 9,000 feet during the first week of October. So it shouldn't be...
I was thinking about using the Outdoor Vitals Aerie 30 degree Hammock/Underquilt (1lb. 13oz.), with an Outdoor Vitals Ultralight Insulated Sleeping Pad R-4 (1lb. 2oz.), an Outdoor Vitals 0 Degree Stormloft Down Sleeping Bag (2lb. 10oz.), and an Outdoor Vitals 6 sided Ultralight Hammock Tarp...
I've been on the search for a shelter for an upcoming hunt, and had just about settled on a floorless shelter. Well I came across a video of people using hammocks, and it peaked my interest again. After researching, and thinking long and hard about it, I'm wondering why more people don't do it...
Thanks. That's actually one of the first things I started playing with. I love making dirty rice and chicken for dinner. So last night I threw some on my dehydrator. I'll see how it turns out tonight.
Awesome stuff. These sound great. I'm going to have to play around with these. I just recently got a 5 gallon bucket full of flax seeds too, so I'll definitely be using some of them.
