The fun I have elk hunting is not dependent on me killing anything. It sure would be nice, but I enjoy the whole process, including the months of physical training I’ve done to get ready. Elk hunting is good for my body and soul, whether I ever kill anything or not.
I started with deer as a teenager, but I want to start more small game hunting (lot of rabbits around here) as a way to be outside year-round and hone my skills.
I added some straps and three-bar sliders so I can hang this drawstring pouch (came with my gaiters) from my backpack belt. Sure it’s not much, but it’s a start.
Thanks for all the thoughts! This is a rifle hunt. I hunted the same unit last year and I know there will be a bunch of pressure on the other side of the mountain, and nearly zero pressure on this side - it’s just not got any obvious access, so I didn’t try hunting it last year. This spring I...
In all my scouting this summer I found one really good spot, but I’m pretty sure it’s a bedding area. It’s a bench halfway up the hill, but it’s covered in scat from one end to the other, with some trees and mostly grass. The slopes around have a rub or two and a few trails with a couple spots...
Every four years they re-evaluate tag numbers and re-allocate tags. This year they added and split a number of hunts, so the codes changed pretty significantly. But for some reasons the hunt codes are just assigned sequentially rather than something like unit #-weapon code #-hunt number.
Apparently I’m buying a truck. My FIL got a good deal on one, bought it, and I’ll buy it from him. He will deliver it the week before my hunt. I didn’t think I’d be able to afford a decent rig for a while yet, but this one was too good a deal to pass on.
My buddy that came on my hunt last year, I swear he ate nothing but fresh apples and peanut granola bars all week, always looked like it was a stroll in the park for him.
It’s in the window seat. (Arsenic and Old Lace anyone)
I already bought a new pack, new boots, new knife, and a pack sling for my rifle. I still need a new stove/cooking pot, gaiters, and a few pockets to add to my pack’s waist belt.
Different but related question…
It seems to me that bear spray would be more effective than a pistol, for the simple reason that I am unlikely to hit a bear if I’m panicked. The spray can affect a large area so I don’t have to aim precisely. Am I wrong?
