On mine, I've used neither, but if I were after a more permanent solution, a dab of blue Loktite would suffice. Just have your wife/buddy hold the upper receiver while you work the strap wrench. I'd be shocked if the nut ever backed out.
By all means, get a receiver rod. Or, someone here will let you borrow one. They'll all fit the SOLO upper.
That said, for straight-pull builds, I've never had an issue with just going hand tight with the barrel nut or using a strap wrench to go just beyond that.
To go really lightweight, you must do four things:
1. Luck out. Example: the polymer Blackthorne upper receiver I scored years ago is a rare find. Without that, going sub-3 would have been more challenging.
2. Get creative. Off-the-shelf parts won't cut it. You must modify and think...
I believe the guts of the various Trijicon scopes are built to the same standard. The only variables are tube size, illumination, turrets, and reticles. From what I gather, the consensus across the product lines is glowing endorsement for tracking, holding zero, RTZ, etc.
Case size being equal, the bigger the bore diameter, the more efficient the cartridge will be in a short barrel. Examples: 338 Federal is more efficient than .308, 6.5 CM is more efficient than 22 CM, .30-06 is more efficient than .25-06, etc.
Here’s my take. There’s two reasons to go 6x45 over .223. 1) legality in certain states. 2) increased performance from sub-16-inch barrels. That’s it.
No animal will know the difference. Put bullet in vitals, and lights go out in less than 20 seconds.
OP, if you have a few years to waste, search "TMK" on this forum. You'll find 13,464 firsthand accounts of kills that range from 10 feet to 1,000 yards on lil' critters like prairie dogs up to the big stuff like moose and brown bear.
Even the little TMKs work great. Most on Rokslide love 'em...
Sweet rifle. Well done. I'd like to build something almost identical.
My Mini .223 would have the barrel chopped and threaded at 12.5 inches. I'd spin on a Griffin GP5 suppressor and pin and weld the can to the barrel. This would be short, handy, balance nicely, and provide adequate ballistics...
It's been a year since I used that 6 ARC barrel. At the time, it wasn't smooth to operate, but it was usable. An important note is this: At the time, I was clueless about removing the gas rings and extractor O ring, so I never used it correctly in my traditional upper modified to be a...
