I'm also looking at Swaro X series objectives. After being disappointed in a Vanguard Endeavor HD65A this past season for a variety of reasons, I'm looking at a serious upgrade to a STX with either a 65 or 85 objective. I'm towards the 85 for increased twilight factor and thinking I may add a...
Doing some digging I found two stuff sacks that are included to anyone who wants them. I think one of them is for my wide pad (seems bigger than the reg mummmy pad). The other is a pump bag that I’m not sure where came from but am find adding.
Planning to post this on the saddle hunter forum but figured I'd post here as well.
Badlands Monster Fanny Pack (predator pack not included) - $100 TYD
Used this late season to pack in extra clothing. I added straps to attach a predator pack, but it sags with the predator and 4 sticks...
Minox MD 50 Straight Spotting Scope 15-30x50 - $100 TYD
Thought I’d like the smaller profile, but was disappointed in the light gathering and don’t see myself using it and 15s.
Vanguard Endeavor HD65A 15-45x65 - $200 TYD
Glass is scratch free and 100% functional. There is a white mark on the...
Thermarest NeoAir X-Therm Regular - $120 TYD
Used on a week-long spring camping trip. Awesome pad but ended up buying the long wide version. My wide slick bag didn’t fit well on the standard. Think I lost the stuff sack, but if you want I'll dig around for it. I like using orange shock cord in...
Very carefully seems to be the theme. Only thing I'll add is to make sure the new blade fully snaps in. I learned this the hard way on an elk this year when the blade popped off. Luckily I was going gutless and just put it back on. Would have sucked if it happened in the body cavity.
Trip and Gear Report
Trip Thoughts: I had a great time with my dad and brother. I’m thankful that my dad was able to get one opening morning but think 3 person hunts aren’t ideal. I felt a bit bad that we left dad back at camp most days, but there was no way he could have done the hiking we...
Day 5
With just the morning left to hunt before heading back to Denver then home to Michigan we got up extra early and got back on the cliffs. Hopeful that we’d played the 50/50 game right. Unfortunately, we saw very few deer compared to the previous days. Not sure if it was the slightly higher...
Day 4
Hoping to get another crack at that giant we got up extra early and got onto the cliffs above where we had seen the herd of deer the previous morning. Like clockwork we started seeing deer moving from the bottom to private. Mostly doe, fawn, and possible spike bucks. Off on the far side...
Day 3
Interested in the bucks from the previous morning we decide to hike over to that side of the valley in the dark. Hiking in I notice fresh cattle tracks on our path. Only two set’s one big and one small so I’m wondering if I’ve mis-identified a moose track though I don’t think there is...
Day 2
Dad slept in but we had another early morning. We planned to hike up on the cliffs we had planned the previous morning and glass the area. Once we got up there we spotted a large group of deer with a few nice bucks about a half mile away feeding towards private land. Hurriedly, we dropped...
On to Colorado.
Day 0/1
Early wake up to hit the road. I drove daylight to daylight and arrived at camp an hour after sunset. After helping them get the wall tent fully set (they hadn’t used it before) I unpacked, got their packs and gear organized for the morning, skipped dinner, and passed...
Skull boil rack stack
Chest freezer with one deboned deer and one deboned elk. We cycled all the meat thru for the drive home.

Trip Thoughts: This hunt was a stress filled marathon. I think we put too much pressure on ourselves to tag out and fill freezers. Sometimes at the expense of enjoying the moment and preventing ourselves from getting rundown. I still had an awesome time but look forward to...
Day 6
Long drive to the elk spot with the same plan as opening day. Not much sign in the burns so we quickly got high and glassed around. Down on the private we spotted a group of ~30 elk that looked to be headed to the timbered public to bed. Jackpot. They just needed to make it thru a band of...
