I’d go non insulated. With good socks I’ve been comfortable in the mid teens without insulation in my nevadas, but I’m sure there are others that may get cold feet even with insulation in those temps since everyone’s bodies and perception of comfort varies.
My dad just got an XDM 10mm and wanted a shoulder holster, so I told him I’d make one for him and save him some money. The holster was about $60 and the webbing and buckles were about $20. It is comfortable and carries well. It took some time but was a fun winter project.
I would second the recommendation to check out Custer State Park and go hiking around the needles, very cool country. I used to live in the Black Hills and found this a few years ago.

I have a H&B forge med camp axe that I really like at about 1.5#. Better chopper than a hatchet but still pretty light.

308 federal terminal ascent 175 grain. Cow elk slightly quarting away at about 70 yards. Shattered offside femur and lodged in muscle just under the skin.
