What we've seen in Wyoming is that an APR would reduce resident participation for a short period of time. Maybe that'd create a short bump in buck ratios. But also, leaving them on too long has some undesired effects. As you probably know being a Washingtonian, living in the "super 2" state.
I've not hunted in this part of the world, but isn't the NR total hunters essentially capped at 10% of the tags in every OTC unit?
I'd also like to see more sportsmen letters giving metrics of what success looks like if this is implemented. Like what's the goal? Higher buck ratio? Higher...
Boy, was I wrong! Haha. Thanks for sharing man. Sounds like their fawn numbers crashed.
You made me curious so I looked it up in the reports. 2019 there were 74 fawns per 100 does. 2020 there were only 41 per 100. 54 in 2021, and 59 in 2022.
I think conventional wisdom says 60-65 can be a...
Yeah, I think the closest collars in Wyoming are the Laramie Mountains deer. There are some down in Bates Hole, too. But none out in the prairie country that I know of. Would be interesting to know what's caused their rapid decline for sure. Especially since it's in an area with domestic sheep...
Yep. Those deer were in their population objective range just 3 years ago. The decline correlates specifically with the start of the super hot and dry drought we had for 3 summers in a row. Should start turning around. The habitat looked great after this year.
Yep! It certainly isn't sunshine and rainbows in some places (G & K), but my experience has been better than expected compared to the headlines while glassing units in Regions L, H, Q, B, Y, and F.
They did it in the April Commission meeting. And not the same with whitetails since the public, generally speaking, is good with keeping their numbers down, but they did eliminate all pronghorn doe tags in most areas. They certainly did in my pronghorn area, which also overlapped with a Region B...
Just tryin' to update folks...WGFD eliminated all mule deer doe hunting in these areas this year based on public feedback and low population numbers...
The biggest difference I think we're seeing in the places I frequent in Wyoming is a decrease in hunter participation in OTC areas. Which essentially does the same thing as if it was a limited quota tag, but you cut the tag numbers.
I think it's going to vary from place to place, but I could...
Yes they did! Dave from Your Mountain is on the WWF's board and has a good mind. Haven't listened to the two-part podcast though.
Our director Joy also hopped on with Coursey from MFF on one of those and they hashed out a lot of good information right after it released for more of an overview...
Just saw a mature buck this morning still packing velvet and know of another that went through a central Wyoming check station last weekend. If we’d have had a hot summer, I’d expect EHD, but with how cool it was and given last winter, I think evidence is good that these are just late bloomers.
