I’ve stayed a few nights in Alamosa throughout the years and I can’t remember anything that was above mediocre food or lodging. We stayed at the best western which was pretty dated but we didn’t have issues either. Other than some boutique places most of the San Luis valley is pretty run down or...
Unless you live in a state with a bunch of BLM land it can’t be understated how valuable it is to belong to a private range. You will be surrounded by a much higher skill level of shooter and learn a lot. You show up, talk to guys about their cool guns and often get to shoot them. You have a...
How much money do you have to spend?
Spend your money on a good rifle scope and good 8/10x42 binoculars. Do not spend any money on a spotting scope for years to come.
MSA Sordins with gel cups are my preferred ear pro. I will add foamies under electronic ear muffs if I’m at an indoor range or stuck next to someone shooting a shorter barreled braked rifle.
Mostly I prefer a private range with space to spread out and I just wear electronic muffs with a...
I own an X-Bolt mountain pro and a T3x Lite Stainless. The x-bolt is a great out of the box option, its biggest weakness is the trigger weight is pretty bad considering the price point. As a hunting rifle they are nearly perfect and everyone that has used mine likes it. My dad keeps trying to...
It’s largely because while carbon fiber is really strong in tension it sucks in compression. It doesn’t clamp well and the additional layers required to make it work are negligible weight savings to 6000/7000 series aluminum. The material properties of aluminum are nearly identical in tension...
Colorado publishes a point out report of every tag issued by year and draw results by points and choice. There you will find the answers.
It seems like you really need to dive into the research aspect of western hunting. There is nothing left for tags in July beyond OTC elk and random tag...
Deer tags are draw at this point but tons go as 0 points, 2nd choice or return tags. 1st and 2nd rifle CO deer tags are quite easy to come by dispute being “draw.”
I don’t understand why it matters if a tag is draw or OTC. It just requires some prior planning. Tons of “draw” tags can be had...
Until you have bought the tag, committed to going regardless of whether or not anyone else is coming along and pulled out of the driveway going west are just another basic eastern hunter dreaming of out west. Really no different from the guy sitting across from me on the airport parking shuttle...
Every aspect of the outdoor industry is overstocked and on sale, Sitka is no different.
Sitka has always had some cringe worthy marketing and social media presence which is completely detached from the technical merits of their product. Not sure what’s new there.
I hope these work out. I played with the sfp version of the scope at scheels and it is a compelling overall package. I hope Leupold has changed their ways but I’m skeptical until we have more data points.
+1 to this.
Spotting scope are best ignored until you can spend $1500-$2k on a Kowa, Swarovski, Leica. Middle steps provide no value.
Spotting scopes ask a lot optically and they have to be almost perfect and even then they are heavily limited effected by atmospheric conditions.
I absolutely dread pulling trailers for thousands of miles. They are just huge headaches with tires, lights, etc. I’ve pulled a trailer for 1 of a dozen trips out west and it was a constant headache. Depending on your vehicle it can massacre fuel economy or be squirrelly one you get a good 30...
For what’s it’s worth the shield magazines are pretty good based on my experience and my friend’s experience. They definitely need to be vetted in each gun but they work well enough to consider. I still run stock 10 rounders in my G48 but that’s because I haven’t dedicated the time to fully vet...
I carry a leatherman skeletool and bit set with all my rifle bits. Torque wrenches and full cleaning rod are at the vehicle. Taping muzzles really helps with obstructed barrels.
