Thanks for everyone's input and experiences so far. It's been pretty much what I expected to hear from others. I didn't want to get a thumb release and end up hating it in a hunting situation though so I figured I would talk to some people first.

How many guys use a thumb release for hunting? I'm due for a new release and considering trying a thumb button. Ive always used a trufire hardcore but I'm looking at the carter quickie or the carter wise choice. Any help/advice in this area would be appreciated. I tried searching for this topic...
Hey thanks man. This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I've just never owned an exo so I wasnt sure on the buckles and webbing. Sounds like the best option is to just run the whole exo system.

If you like the idea of the uncompahgre I would recommend it for your use. As you know, it's not going to be the warmest out there but it will exceed your expectations for early to mid season and is water/wind resistant. This is assuming that the Texas "winter" you quoted isnt anything terribly...
Look into the first lite sawbuck pants. If you like the durability of the double knee tripple stitch carhart pants for the type of hunting you do but want something lighter and breathable then I feel like this pant is going to be a go to for your hunting conditions..
