I had a Swarovski go down on a bear hunt. I had previously shot some groups in the 2's and I missed a bear wildly at 300. I backed out and called my wife who brought me a different rifle and I was able to kill the bear later that day.
I sent that scope to swaro and had the worst warranty wait...
I meant the forend. That mg gets cold... like gloves stick to it cold.
I'm good with everything except the smoke stock. I killed a bull and was under him rolling it for a position shift. He came down hill and I jumped out of the way....except a tree branch stuck through the stock and stopped...
I find limb profile and performance more important than just length. My 58" Whistler and my 62" recurve are similar oal strung, vastly different and I have no idea how my life would be without both.
Be aware that the first few seasons will be frustrating, humbling and some of the best learning experiences you'll have.
I tend to hunt areas that play into my bow. North Idaho gets hammered by hunters and is jungle thick....perfect for a longbow.
If making meat is your objective, the trad...
If you open a trigger that's had wd sprayed in it for a few years, you'll know exactly how triggers fail.
The best gun oil I've ever used is R&O turbine oil. If it's good enough to keep a perpetually wet, multi billion dollar hydroelectric unit spinning....it's plenty for our sloppy rifles...
Jim Borden makes the short list of smartest men on earth regarding rifle actions. He's an engineer by trade and own one of the highest regarded actions made today.
Jim made some interesting comments about torque and wet threads that deserves a listen. You can skip ahead to about the 2 hour...
Yellow bottles of heet work good at pushing out water and drying quickly. I poke a small hole in the foil to squirt a stream if needed and it's good to make ice melt. I keep a little bottle (eye drops bottle filled with heet) in my oh shit kit as it's good for fire or frozen trigger....but...
The original vari x scopes were good for durability. The reticles were the weak point... but when you busted a wire it was easy to see. I had an m8 on a 223 break a wire...pure random. The friction scopes.....were sometimes finicky to get the erector settled, but once it was there.....it never...
6.5 barrels pop up in the classifieds often. Market price is around $125.00 +/- depending on condition/option. If you want to roll a creed....that's the cheap entry fee.
6mm barrels don't seem to pop up as it's the current darling. For an east coast guy who can't shoot all that far easily...
Buy a cheap green mountain blank in straight contour and give it a shot. I made a wood follower initially to kill the chatter....but it's not as good as a pneumatic or hydraulic.
It is.....IF you have a hydraulic follow rest. The killer on contouring is the barrel tries to climb the tool like a jump rope. I've done enough to know that it's not worth it with my lathes.
Fluting is much easier to fixture for and work holding is pretty simple.
Karl Feldkamp does a lot of...
Great buck and choice of tools.
I have a 58" 50@28 2 piece myself and it's truly amazing.
Stickbow, what color did you go with on feathers and paint? I've been trying to hit that color for 3 years without luck.
