Appreciate this. Hadn’t seen it before. What’s the achievable adjustment (realistically) with a standard seating die? .005”? .01”? .015”? just by tightening/loosening the die in set up
Thank you for this. I had never heard people acknowledge hardening or forward movement of brass through firings that can thicken the neck? It seemed like people were setting it once and forgetting about it, which made me think their neck tension wasn’t even what they thought it was.
Just trying to understand everything before I start buying. I don’t want to spend $60-$100 on a standard set of FL dies, and then 2 months later decide I want bushing dies to try and squeak out more accuracy. Realistically, I probably won’t need them, because I’m sure my rifles can shoot way...
I posted this on my other thread but it was very off topic and I’m not getting a response. I have not yet started reloading, so I don’t know anything, but I’d like your expertise.
Bushings are ordered off of case neck thickness x2 + bullet diameter - .001/.002/.003 (desired neck tension)...
Okay quick question regarding bushing dies. Sitting at my desk and had this thought
Bushings are ordered off of case neck thickness x2 + bullet diameter - .001/.002/.003 (desired neck tension), correct?
Do you remeasure and reorder bushings after every (or every other/every third) firing? If I...
Appreciate the advice. Right now my primary goal is to load bullets I can’t shoot from factory. I love partitions, and I can’t get a factory partition in 6.5 PRC (I get it, that bullet doesn’t maximize BC and long range efficiency in the PRC. I don’t care. I bought the PRC cause it was shiny and...
Totally unrelated to this original post, but y’all have been very nice and helpful and I greatly appreciate it.
When trying to acquire components - I know which bullets I want to hunt with (partitions for the 308, accubonds for the PRC). Do you buy and develop separate “range” loads that use...
Knowing my personality, I’m sure it will turn to much more than I’m saying now. I’m just looking for a relatively simple way to get started while still producing better than factory quality Ammo. However, I do understand that I could be throwing $150 at a set of dies that I may want to replace a...
That does look like a pretty good deal. The primers have to be single loaded if using federal (per their disclaimer), and the scale looks iffy, but I like the rest of it for a good price. Thanks!
3 shot groups. 1/2” 3 shot groups. Nothing crazy. It’s achievable with factory in certain rounds, but not rounds I’m interested in hunting with. And I have a hunch velocity ES is large in factory and it starts to show at 300+y.
The type S dies intimidate me cause of the bushings. For my 6.5PRC...
Your die comments have sent me down a die rabbit hole all day. I don’t know what I don’t know. Here I was thinking go buy the proper dies for your cartridge and get to it, but that’s a whole other world/debate.
I like the idea of the micrometer seating dies (forster, Redding, etc). That makes...
Thanks all! Okay, so a vote to nix the tumbler.
Is my list of what I NEED below complete?
Hand press
Decapper
Case trimmer
Hand priming unit
Scale
308 & 6.5 PRC dies (sizing die and seating/crimping die at a minimum?)
Tray
Is that it? Is that all that is absolutely required?
Never even considered this, but I see how convenient it would be at the range. Also no bulk, which is nice cause my hobby room is pretty tight as is. I just watched a video on it and it looks quite simple. Thanks!
I don’t reload, but I really want to. I keep making excuses that I don’t have $1,000+ to drop on beginner equipment and some materials.
I have about 250 once fired 308 cases, ~80 6.5 prc once fired, and 100 new 6.5 prc cases. I’m thinking if I buy one piece at a time, starting from the...
I’ve found quite a few posts on forums around the internet about 95 Chileans converted to 257. If you stay with standard loading (not +p) I’m finding the original 257 was 45k cup. I don’t disagree that the action/bolt might need some work to restore to original, safe strength, but I don’t see...
I can’t find any smiths in the middle Tennessee area that seem to do full rebuild work, just your typical AR work. I guess I’ll have to send it off to someone and have em evaluate the action before I commit any cost. Ideally they’ll approve it for a 257, but if not 6.5x55 will have to do
Appreciate the recap. What’s the 93/95, 96, 98 you mention? I’ve seen this all over when researching about this gun. Year manufactured? Are they just different styles of Mauser actions? How do you know which is which?
You said 46k max, but then listed 2 cartridges for a new barrel that are both...
Just talked to a guy over at McGowen. He said they do Mausers all the time, and .257 Roberts shouldn’t be an issue as far as pressures or bolt face go. Gave me the below quote:
Barrel $370
Install $205
Timney Featherweight Deluxe $150
Cock on open conversion $70
Trigger install $45
Cock on open...
Boy oh boy. A lot here. Okay, so can’t go high pressure, but would something like a .257 Roberts work? It is .473 base, and I know you said the .480” bolt face may not work with that. Could a smith close it? Just add money? Lol
So being cock on close, it’s never going to smooth out to be really...
Really appreciate it! So we’re confident it’s Chilean of some sort? Likely manufactured pre WW2 (@tater with that info). Obviously rebarreled, and Likely restocked.
So now a few more questions:
1) not of any significant value, correct? Couple hundred bucks to the right person?
2) the action is...
