    Backcountry packs for hunting

I have several packs but my J34 does it all. Packs in 60lbs+ of gear and then functions nicely as a day pack. Yeah, it is a bit heavier than most day packs but, I never notice the additional pound or two because it fits me so well. The onboard rifle scabbard is the best.

    GoalZero portable solar power

I bought the Guide 10 for a backpack elk hunt last year and I have no complaints. It worked as advertised.

    SALE! Russell Outdoors Gear

I ordered the lightweight merino top and bottom. If they are even close to the quality of my Red Ram lightweight base layers, I'll be happy.

Do you have a long term hunting goal?

I've pretty much hunted deer most of my life and have been not been successful the past two years hunting elk in CO. So, elk is still on my list along with pronghorn antelope. Would like to hunt brown bear in Alaska but probably getting too old for this one to happen.

Do you ALWAYS filter/treat your water??

I always filter. I use a Sawyer Squeeze and MSR Mini and it doesn't take much time to filter enough for a day of hunting. You never know what might roll in upstream and I just don't want to take a chance of messing up a good outing.

    Family tent

I've been looking at the Nemo Pentalite which is a 4 person tipi tent with a vestibule, I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I'm close. It has gotten some great reviews. Might want to take a look at this light-weight tent.

    Dived in.....

Great pack! I'm betting that you will really like the suspension system and, the bear blood stains just add character.

    Who's an Elk Slayer?

Numerous deer in several states, but 0 bulls and 0 cows in my first two years of elk hunting in CO. This year my hunting buddy and I are hopeful we will be drawn for a semi-guided hunt in northern NM.

What does your layering system look like?

I hunt turkey, deer, and hogs in Oklahoma and for the past two years, I've hunted elk in CO. This year I've applied for a semi-guided elk hunt in New Mexico. Most of the components of my layering system are relatively inexpensive but they work. - Icebreaker lightweight boxers - Smartwool base...

    Tripod preference ?'s

If I could get a carbon fiber tripod with the features of my Vanguard MAK 203OS (Aluminum Alloy) that can support at least 7 lbs with a folded length of under 24", I'd be all over it. The features I like on my Vanguard are: Extended Height - 63.75", 3-section, flip-lock legs, Gear-driven...

    Rain jacket

The Redhead (size XL) weighs in a 1lb. 2oz. according to my trusty Shimano scale which I re-calibrated before weighing.

    Long/wide sleeping pad in bivy

Check out the Integral Designs Bugaboo II bivy. I have the one that I've used for a couple of years now and it has worked well. I've used it with and without a tarp tent and the eVent material is lightweight and waterproof. I have a Big Agnes Air Core pad that I use with mine. The specs...

    Rain jacket

I would also take a look at the RedHead® Pro Light GORE-TEX® Camo Rain Jacket at Bass Pro Shops website. It is a Gore-tex performance shell rather than the Paclite shell. It is a bit heavier but still very packable (packs in its own pocket), and has pit zips. Very happy with mine.

    Gloves?

Luke, thanks for the tip! I grabbed a couple of pairs of the Red Steer Chilly Grips and it looks like they are going to work really well. Now I can get rid a half dozen pair of gloves I've tried over the past few years that never lived up to the hype.

    Mountainsmith mountain shelter lt

I have an ID Sildome which is similar concept, but the Mountainsmith looks larger and definitely has a more usable interior space. I Like Edg1967 thoughts on installing a stove jack and using a small wood stove. It appears that it may be large enough.

Eberlesstock just one j34 vs jp9 blue widow?? OR???

Tee, just my opinion but it sounds like you might need to look at a couple of different packs. For a 21-day hunt, (bivy hunt or not) I wouldn't even try to use either my J34 or Longhunter. I turkey hunt using a bivy sack and/or tarp tent, sleeping bag, pad and carry decoys, food, water, and...

Eberlesstock just one j34 vs jp9 blue widow?? OR???

My two main packs are are a J34 and Kifaru standard Longhunter G2, so I can't comment on the Elerlestock Blue Widow. I am 5' 10" and weigh 195 lbs with torso length is just under 21". I really like the J34 for its versatility because of its ability to expand especially using spike camp duffle...

Rain Cover - Timberline T2 Kifaru

I use a Mountain Hardware pack cover. The large fits both my Kifaru Longhunter and Eberlestock J-34 although it is a bit large for the J-34 unless I've got it loaded with spike camp duffle. http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Pack-Rain-Cover/OU4060,default,pd.html

What to look for in trekking poles

I have used both but Flick locks work best for me. Someday I might try carbon fiber poles, but for now, my Black Diamond Trail Shock aluminum poles are sturdy and perform well.

I think I found my final insulation piece.

Dotman, you are absolutely correct so, no argument here. I became a cheapo with regard to hunting clothing after badly ripping a fairly expensive down jacket after just one hunt in South Dakota. I realized early on that I'd rather spend my budget on things like my Kenetrek boots, my Kifaru and...
