Breaking Rules, Tack, and Everything Else: My DIY Horseback Hunting Chronicle

Don't let the naysayers slow you down. Your horses sound like every horse I've owned. They all have quirks or bad habits. Sounds like you know your limitations. It'll get easier and faster the more you do it. I'd also vote to ditch the wood panniers.

    Unicorn

Mares are for breeding, geldings are for riding... That's what I was told, I'm joking of course. She seems to work for you pretty good!

Moving to Missoula, MT… bad idea?

Missoula is a dump and a blemish on Montana. I'd rather live there than Georgia but I'm thankful not everybody is similar to me. With that said, those house prices are insane.

    Horses or no horses

Always horses.... Some situations call for you to get dropped off and picked up though. No water or feed close to where your hunting. Im in good shape but don't need to break my back hauling heavy loads of meat anymore.

    How many grains at 600yds?

Lots of inputs to shoot 600 accurately. Wind is the biggest. Temp is another. I elk hunt when it could be +60 or -20 that will effect your point of impact quite a bit. It's not hard but it takes more practice than shooting 3-400yds.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

So how many have you killed and with what caliber and bullet?

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

I'd be willing to bet anybody who's actually killed griz or coastal browns wouldnt recommend a .223. Elk, black bear, moose sure. Griz no. Would it kill one? Yes. Would you be tracking it through the brush, most likely. They are substantially thicker skinned/muscled than species listed above...

    Montana hunting dogs

Airedales can be really good upland dogs plus if you're in Mt and run into griz that can be good at dealing with them too. Most bird dogs I've seen would piss themselves if they ran into a griz in a coulee.

308: Is It Making a Comeback??

Anybody bragging about their rifles ability to kill deer has me scratching my head. They aren't hard to kill. Elk too for that matter, if you hit the target they won't go far.

Where to find horses for sale in Montana

Stop driving a couple hrs east of Kalispell. Browning real estate should be more reasonable and cheaper horses around there too.

Where to find horses for sale in Montana

I'd say depends how long you are willing to wait to replace your horse. Or how much your willing to spend. I bought a horse recently and watched local craigslist and other local ads for 6mo. I got a grade 5yr old for 2k that has worked out great. I had to drive 4hrs to pick her up though too. If...
