Jason Hairston of KUIU passed away today

Very sad story, I cannot imagine the pain his family is experiencing. My prayers go out to them and also those who may be dealing with the same thing. Stid, thanks for sharing the People article. The stories you hear after the fact are tough to read, but may shine some light on issues people...

    Colorado OTC Archery Elk Advice

For the record to all newbies....any low pressure hunting area holding elk in an OTC unit in Colorado is going to be considered a "honey hole" Any info posted online about these areas will definitely make them honey holes no more. You will have to find these places on your own if you want them...

    Need help from Colorado residents

Care to share more? I live on the Ks/Co border and would like to find a place for the future also, just not sure it will be worth living there when I reach the age I can retire. I make a few trips to Colorado each year, usually a summer trip with the family, an elk trip, and when time allows I...

How would you kill this elk?

Typical elk "encounter" You get so close and only need a to get a little closer, or an elk to take one step to clear vitals from behind a tree, wind to hold its position just a little longer, etc.... As you go on hunting you will be so close, but no cigar many times. Analyze your encounters...

Rain in Colorado? Finally getting some?

Can anybody comment on the conditions around Gunnison? 3-4 weeks ago done a loop from Canon City-Salida-Buena Vista-Col Springs and that was really dry for the most part. Has the Ark Valley gotten any rains yet?

Found - unrecovered bull in Crazy Mountains, MT

Very cool to hook the hunter back up with that bull, props to you. Shot placement looks good from the picture.? That thick dark timber makes for tough recovery.

    Traveling with stock

No experience traveling 18, but last year loaded mine up and took them for an 8 hour ride until I reached my trailhead. Made about 3 stops for fuel, food, and license....I would give them all a little treat and scratch on the head at each stop. They were ready to unload but seemed to take it...

    Horse Size

I second this. Most importantly if it is right for your daughter, then you can make it work. Don't load it real heavy, but don't be afraid to make it work either.

    Canvas tent Help

I'd try Davis Tent in Denver. Not sure if they do custom tents but they are easy to work with and affordable.

    Cow specific tips/tactics

You said OTC, so that rules out spikes. Four point minimum for OTC units. Ive had a bad old cow, not sure how old she was but she had no teeth left and was very gamey. As others said, satellite bulls are a good option, if you find cows there will be bulls in the same area in September. Learn...

    CO 49 Elk

ATVs aren't a necessity for the unit, there are some good roads that provide access....then of course hiking some vertical terrain. I'd expect to see some people most places you go, some will be hunters and plenty of hikers/bikers too.

    Colorado Isolation?

Ive been in real deep nasty country and not found elk. Ive also found elk really close to several hunting camps and dozens of vehicles within a half mile of the trailhead. What I mean is they can be found in lots of places, some of which will surprise you no doubt. Of course its better to...

    Best way to cook dove

+1 for the jalapeno bacon poppers. I also like to use the breasts for stir-fry. Marinade them for a couple hours minimum in sauce of your choice. Remove from marinade and cook on medium/medium high heat in stir-fry pan. I usually add some soy sauce, olive oil, or other Asian-inspired liquid...

    Chasing Montana Black Bear

Cool videos, thanks for sharing. If I understood right you were only hunting afternoon and evenings.? Curious why you wouldn't also hunt in the mornings? Ive never hunted bear and know nothing about them, just curious.

    Burroes

I have no experience with them, I have a horse and two mules. But if you scramble them all together and look at their attitudes its more like I have two horses and a donkey.

    Burroes

Something I would have not considered, maybe this could be solved with mammoths. I think this same issue would come up for the goat and llama packers also.?
