Yikes, no way I would try that. Same as those who try to not take a stove. Many of people have left the mountains in defeat, hungry and tired as they don't have the fuel in the body to perform or keep morale up. Food is all about finding what makes you work/perform and dialing in the right...
I'm in the 1.75-1.8 lbs range too. I try to keep regular foods as much as possible. Some of my favorites include
Corn chips - 2 oz per day - a must
Jerky - 2 oz per day
Protein Bar - Quest
trail mix - 2 oz per day. But i get tired of eating nuts everyday, so maybe every 2nd or 3rd day in my...
Agree with the short action approach and something short and lightweight. Accordingly, that's why I went with a 300 wsm, which is a bit more versatile and unforgiving in the mountains. I have a 6.5 as well, but just can't seem to use it as my primary mountain rifle.
But if a 25-06 is the...
I’ve had issues with Talley ULW’s well in past. i moved away from using them but tried them again on my last two builds as their weight is so attractive. I had them pinned and have had zero issues with them so confidence is back.
Thinking about building up a long range rifle in 338 variety, custom build. Thinking of these calibers as potential options
338 Allen Express
338 Khan
338 terminator
what are your thoughts on these calibers in terms of sheer performance? Or should I be looking at another direction?
whats...
I think most custom builders should provide this service. McWhorters have built my last two customs an they provided loaded ammo tuned to rifle with recipe.
Yep, did it on my snow sheep hunt on Kamchatka last year. Slept on my pack, butt pad in all my puffy insulation and rain gear. I survived the night. Shot a nice sheep the next day. It added to the experience and memories.
Without reading all 7 pages of responses, all I can say is I absolutely love Solo trips in the back country. Its a great way to escape, do some thinking, see "creation" first hand and get some perspective. I usually come back from the back country in a better place mentally.
The 12x50 EL’s are magical on a tripod. I seem to see more with this setup than with my Swaro 15x56’s. However i can’t hold them steady off hand.
For sheep hunting up north, I would be more inclined to stick with something in the 10x power range as more versatile.
I don’t have experience...
It is getting insane. Its also becoming out my reach for me as well and I make a good living to support my sheep fever habit. I’m glad I have most of my sheep hunts around the world checked off already as with current price trends, it wouldn't be possible.
$70k!!! They sure are proud. Did they elaborate why a guy should pay nearly double to go with them? I find that ridiculously over priced and almost insulting. I guess there is an ass made for every seat and that’s their target clientele .
So glad I got my stone competed a few years ago at 1/2...
For Elk, I also definitely prefer the 30 cal. The 300 WSM is a fantastic caliber that is notably accurate and for me, has been very forgiving with the 168 grain barnes TTSX on sheep and goats.
Instead of the 6.5-300 wby, I would consider the 300 wby or even the 300 WM for a long action. As...
With only 9 points, I wouldn't be trying to build preference points for sheep in WY given the cost to do so. Better to try the random draws, raffle tickets, <1 drawings or just try to save up.
