Something I tell my guys at work quite a bit...use the right tool for the job.
Bipod was designed for prone shooting.
Tripod was designed for glassing and shooting from a more elevated position. If the legs will spread wide enough a tripod can be used as a bipod in the prone position. Just...
It's all personal preference. Quality chassis and stocks will both get the job done. I've shot most flavors of both chassis and conventional stocks. Currently shooting a manners lrh cf stock with built in mini chassis.
I prefer the MPA hybrid for a hunting chassis and Manners eh-1 or lrh for...
55-57gr of h-1000 is most likely where you want to be. 3k with that bullet and powder would be an extremely hot load in most rifles. Barrels are all different animals so it's possible but not the norm.
I run the 156's at 2930 fps with 56g h-1000. Kills everything really dead.
Bipod lives on my rifle 24/7. Prone off bipod is always first choice. Tripod is also on every trip, strapped to the outside of my pack. It gets used for glassing and all situations where the bipod won't work.
6mm dominates in PRS. 6BR, 6BRA, 6 DASHER are the go to calibers. I've shot all of them in comps. 6BR is very easy to load for and amazingly accurate, 6BRA is faster and still amazingly accurate. You will have to fireform lapua brass. 6 dasher is the fastest of the bunch and factory brass is out...
I'm going next sep and have talked to quite a few folks that have been.
Several recommendations that I received.
Get familiar with a horse if you haven't ridden lately.
Take some of your own food/snacks, stove.
Take extra cheap binos for guides if you have available, apparently, they will try...
There are quite a few good Aoudad outfitters in west tx. In no particular order here are a few that come to mind.
HIGH WEST OUTFITTERS
DOUBLE DIAMOND OUTFITTERS
AHRENS OUTFITTING
H. E. SPROUL RANCH
I haven't used the 147's so no input there. I have used the 156 bergers extensively in a 6.5prc. Just shot a 900+ lb bull elk last weekend at 150yds. He was quartering too so i put it on the front 1/3 of his shoulder.
He did not go 1 step. He hunched up at impact, stood still for about 5...
Guys run steel in comp because they want more weight to to tame recoil. Cost is also a factor, cf barrels are more than double the cost. Comp shootes will run through a few barrels in one season.
I have a few proof on my 6.5 prc that shoots 3/10 with minimal load development.
I use mil but same applies to moa. My dope at 600yds for 6.5 creed is 3.8 mils at 0 degrees. It changes to to 2.3 mils if shooting at an angle of 45 degrees. Thats a difference of 32.4'' at 600yds. Make sure you know your angle or have a rangefinder that has angle compensation.
