OK thanks for the additional notes, guys. I'm been wavering between the two ideas and the idea someone said above mirrors what you're saying here, too - this isn't backcountry, so why "rough it" more than needs be, like you're saying....especially with an older beat up bod, you're right, why...
Thanks Franklin. While we've never had the massive snow dump ourselves up that way (different story in the U.P.!), I know it's completely possible if not probable, so advice taken. Still trying to work out best solution re this wimpy city car.
On the tents and snow loads, thanks here too...
Excellent, thanks Jeremy. I wasn't aware Possum Hollow made muzzle guides - for my Marlins I use Ranger Point Precision guides but this is great to know (and clever, on the cut cases).
Much appreciated.
I just use a kinetic puller with foam at the end, and a Lee universal decapper. I collect the unfired primers and use them again. No issues with either the primers or bullets.
Not sure if this is the right place guys, but just happened to come across a marketplace listing for a new Outdoorz Traverse EPS, unused, for $75 obo. Pack hunting is totally new to me and I'm on a learning curve, thanks for the incredible resource of this site. I know this isn't up to longer...
Wasn't aware of this section so a belated hi to all, from WI. Still-hunt/track Northwoods WI with my son, but hoping for many western hunts ahead. Really grateful for the wealth of information here.
Exactly my story for my .338 M77 Hawkeye, except I got mine off of Guns International. I watched it and when it hadn't moved I counter-offered (Cabela's) and they took it, got a basically brand new one for $825 (the owner had shot a few and hated the recoil). Been a long slog to accumulate...
I love my 45-70, though I've pulled it back for deer some (went to 1450 fps/405 gr v. 1700 fps/425 gr), and love the .338 as well. I know both are unnecessary, but hey, I love to shoot them. Now if I could convince a scope I don't mean anything by it, lol.
Daisy, can I ask how tight the Nemos fit there? My son and I both have the Exped 8R wide (mine is LW, his is MW), which comes in at 25.6", wondering if the Storm Star would handle these side by side.
This is complete news to me and a lot to digest. I've never had an issue, but then up until now the only multi-year experience I have with the Leu's are FX II 2.5 - 20's on board my 45-70 and my son's 336, both of which we keep to 100 yards at the range, and all the kills we've had have been...
Yep, I figured. Just wanted to clarify in case someone was wondering. My son has his great-grandpa's Win 38-55, built sometime around 1904-7, and we can only come in through the muzzle, which we hate to do. Thing of beauty.
Probably not too relevant as we hunt WI northwoods on the move, but the "classic" NE setup - Johnson Mills black/green with orange cape Jac Shirt, wool pants, merino or merino/polyester base layers, motley collection of pendleton and other wool shirts in various weights, uninsulated La Crosse...
Actually Marlins can, and it's easy (remove the lever screw, pull the bolt, pull the ejector pin). That's how I clean my 45-70 and my son's 336. Winchesters, yep, another story.
Ah, OK, gotcha, thanks. TBH I hadn't thought of that - used to just putting everything on in the tent and suffering with the cold, but you make a good point. Also have to admit I'm a bit paranoid of MO poisoning. Somewhere down the road I'd just like to set up a wall tent, but for now looking...
Thanks - just an FYI, this isn't back country, it will be a (closed for the season) campground in Chequamegon NF, with our car. So provisions, even a coleman stove, etc., aren't a problem. We do have an MSR PR too, though.
Hey guys, just an update, all set on sleeping systems (ended up with an Alps Outdoorz Redwood -10, he has his mummy, we both have the underpads). Now, we'll need to be looking for a tent. The one he has is too tight - it's the Black Diamond First light at 82" x 48", won't accommodate the both...
