    SWFA, what’s the deal?

Yup, if the Athlon proves reliable I’m buying three more for other rifles. Tbh the zoom ring & parallax knob tension are perfect, capped windage turret is a plus, image quality is nicer, zero stop is good to have, and I really prefer the 10mil per revolution on the elevation turret. I get...

    SWFA, what’s the deal?

Ordered 3-9x42 HD in Feb 2023, was told March-ish of this year by them recently. Put Athlon Midas Tac 4-16x44 in its place, 120rds of 6.5 Creed and three drops. Two from about two feet, one from a foot high. Still tracks so far, but it’s young yet. We’ll see. Dropped an SWFA 3-15x42 SS scope...

    Longevity of the 7mm-08?

I’ve had seven different 7mm-08 rifles and it’s been a mainstay for me for 15yrs. It’s more a true hunting cartridge than those on either side of it. Want to go monometal? The 120gr options are known to hammer. Standard cup & core? 140gr has a long history of doing the job. Long range? Load a...

    Hornday Comparative

Yeah the case sizing I’ve pretty well settled on .005” shoulder bump. More than most of my shooting buddies but I like the extra feed reliability. I went through full length then into neck sizing, and about five years back settled on full length but just enough shoulder bump. @B23, yessir I...

    Hornday Comparative

Tried it, love it, that’s the only way I’m doing that from now on. I didn’t try the lighter method, right off the bat it’s obviously inconsistent. But anyway, thanks for the help I’d have probably circled that for weeks. The Wheeler method is a snap, easy as pie.

    Hornday Comparative

Yeah after researching I remembered having heard of the various methods from way back, but I had just never gone further with any of them. I’m going to do the lighter method first, then strip the bolt down for the Wheeler method…don’t think I’m going to go as far as doing the barrel removal...

    Hornday Comparative

Yeah I’ve been reading & watching videos since my last post, definitely doing this when I get time. Thanks a bunch!

    Hornday Comparative

Thanks! Gonna try that. Just don’t have a warm fuzzy about the Hornady tool anymore, there’s too much variability it seems.

    Hornday Comparative

I’m not new to reloading, nor to the Hornady OAL gauge, but last night I did something that caused me to doubt its accuracy. I took multiple measurements. I’m setting up a couple new rifles in 6.5 Creed, never had one before. So I’m setting the CBTO for two bullet styles and it was extremely...

New Vortex Razor HD 13-39x56 Spotters

That’s pretty interesting actually. No, I’ve never tried using my other eye. I can close/open my left eye as little or as much as I want without any tension in my face so using a spotter isn’t an issue at all. I’ve watched animals for up to three hours at a time through a spotter with no...

New Vortex Razor HD 13-39x56 Spotters

Oh Yessir, they were right next to each other. Same exact time. I can’t put my finger on it exactly, and would never have noticed it if I weren’t testing so many scopes right next to each other, but I’ve been seeing something slightly downgraded in the image with wide angle eyepieces. Except...

New Vortex Razor HD 13-39x56 Spotters

Interesting point, and it got me thinking about comparisons I’ve done in the past. I’ve compared this Razor 50 to a Kowa 55 and come away wondering why anyone would spend that kind of money for such a marginal gain. Went out this morning bc curiosity got the better of me. I put the Razor 50...

New Vortex Razor HD 13-39x56 Spotters

Dale, if you’re interested I’ll let you know about the Swaro ATC. One just hit my doorstep yesterday. Of course, now that I’m already gone.

New Vortex Razor HD 13-39x56 Spotters

On the road to our hunt area today my buddy and I stopped for about a half hour to glass with the Gen 1 Razor 50, Maven CS.1, and the new Gen 2 Razor 56. We both agreed that the Gen 1 Razor 50 resolved better, was easier to focus, and caused less eye strain. It also resolved better than the...

New Vortex Razor HD 13-39x56 Spotters

When I get more time with it over the next week or so I’ll update. So far though, and this is hardly definitive because I was looking out from inside my house (so through a window), the Maven being a 65mm was brighter and resolved better and it was easier to pull the image from the eyepiece. By...

New Vortex Razor HD 13-39x56 Spotters

Spotter just came in tonight and I only had but 15min with it so I wrote down the FOV numbers (I do this with every scope as a first step). Didn’t have a lot of time so I grabbed the Maven CS.1 for a quick comparison. The Maven is the angled version so the two were almost the exact same...

New Vortex Razor HD 13-39x56 Spotters

Just picked one up, more out of curiosity than anything else. I’ll put it next to a Kowa 88, Kowa 77, Maven CS.1, & Gen 1 Razor 50. Low light and daylight. See where it falls, & share my thoughts if you guys are interested. I’d pit it against a few more but these are what I have on hand and...

    ELD-X & ELD-M

Go with the 180gr! LOL if I get a vote. My 7RM is 1:9-1/2” or I’d have done that. Almost rebarreled mine just to use that bullet.

    ELD-X & ELD-M

Sorry for the late reply; I’m using H4831SC. Tested several powders with nothing other than case fill as a parameter. Picked a few that filled the case properly then shot them over a chronograph in half-grain increments (think it was H4831, H4831SC and RL23 but can check when I get back into...
